NORMAN, Okla.-- The University of Oklahoma Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione announced today the retirement of head volleyball coach Miles Pabst (1978-1999). Pabst has been at the University for 22 years and served as one of only two head volleyball coaches at OU.

"I have had a great time here at the university and with all the volleyball teams that I have coached," said Pabst.

"I've been in coaching for over 30 years and now it's time to let someone else take over. Most importantly, this announcement allows me to spend quality time with my family, especially my wife, who has been ill for some time."

During his tenure as head volleyball coach Pabst has guided five teams to postseason action, finished among the top three in the conference 10 times, including winning the conference tournament in 1987. Pabst has also coached 12 teams to .500 or better seasons, including the 1987 team's 26-8 mark. He leaves the program with an overall record of 436-389-1.

"I wish the players and the program the best of luck and if I can do anything to assist them I'll always be available," said Pabst.

"Miles has brought so much to this university and volleyball program, we want to thank him for his years of loyal service and tremendous tradition that he has built here at OU," said Castiglione. "Not only has Miles produced on the court but he believed in our mission in producing champions for life. We wish him the best in his retirement."

In 1997, Pabst coached his first All-American in Patrice Arrington. Arrington is currently playing professional volleyball in the States. He has also guided seven players to 10 all-conference first team honors and five to the U.S. Olympic Festivals. Arrington and Marcy Crabtree also were invited to tryout for the U.S. National Team while playing under Pabst.

Not only has Pabst had success on the court but 28 of his players have received 50 academic all-conference honors.

A search for a new volleyball coach will begin immediately.
