University of Oklahoma head baseball coach Pete Hughes announced the addition of Roberto Gallegos to his 2016-17 staff. Gallegos, who comes to Norman from Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas, will serve as the Sooners’ volunteer assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. “Roberto is a super-talented young coach and he’s got a bright career ahead of him,” stated Hughes. “He’s a high-energy guy with a great personality and is motivated to be great in this profession. He’s been a pivotal instructor and coach in the Dallas area and brings terrific relationships from the junior colleges.” Gallegos’ duties will also include coaching first base and instructing the OU infielders; part of a defense that has seen its fielding percentage improve 17 points over the last two seasons. He spent the last two seasons as the assistant coach at Navarro, where he began his collegiate playing career. Prior to that, Gallegos worked as an associate scout for the Baltimore Orioles organization. He has also coached in the D-Bat travel baseball system for 10 seasons and guided D-Bat Elite to a Connie Mack World Series Championship in 2014. “I’m thankful to have the opportunity to be part of a prestigious university and continue to grow as a person and coach,” said Gallegos. “It’s a chance to follow my dreams and I consider myself pretty lucky to be able to come to the Big 12 and coach, mentor and teach baseball, which is my passion.” A native of El Paso, Texas, Gallegos played at Navarro from 2005-06. He finished his collegiate career at Northwestern State University at Louisiana where he played for the Demons from 2007-08 and earned a degree in criminal justice. |
