Oklahoma has played in seven conferences over its history beginning with the Southwest Conference in 1915. Since that time, the Sooners have won more than 74 percent of their conference games and captured 50 conference championships.

Four members of the defunct Southwest Conference (Baylor, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech) joined with the original Big 8 conference members to form the Big 12 Conference. The conference was split into two divisions of six teams each with the North and South division champions playing for the title in the conference championship game.

Southwestern departed after the 1916 season while Rice and SMU joined in the 1918 season.
