NORMAN, Okla. - The entire OU track and field team returns to competition Saturday when the Sooners host the OU Classic. Field events begin at 10 a.m. at the Mosier Indoor Facility. The first event on the track is the 60-meter hurdles for women, scheduled for 1 p.m. The final event is the men's mile relay, scheduled for 5:10 p.m. The complete Sooner team was last in competition on Dec. 1 when OU hosted its annual All Comers meet at the Mosier Indoor Facility.

The Field
While the number of teams is small, the quality of the field is great. Joining the Sooners in the meet are Texas Christian, the Big 12's Texas A&M, and juco powerhouse Barton County.

Since The Last Home Meet
While this is the first competition for the entire Sooner team since Dec. 1, two freshmen, Dan Strong and Veronica Clayborne, went to the KSU Winter Pentathlon on Dec. 8. Both finished ninth in the meet, the first time for either to compete in the five-event pentathlon. Strong finished with 3,079 points. He picked up the most points in the high jump (6-4.75/758) and in the 1000 (2:59.06/673). Clayborne finished with 2,842 points. She picked up 724 points in the high jump with her 5-2.50 effort and 692 points in the 60 hurdles with her 10.11.A relatively new event for men, Strong's total ranks second all-time for OU. Clayborne's total places her eighth on the all-time women's list.

Last weekend, OU vault coach Tom Williams, Sooner volunteer assistant Kurt Hanna and seven Sooners went to the USA Track and Field Pole Vault Summit in Reno. Senior Michael McNamara won the men's collegiate elite division title with a vault of 17-8.5, an OU indoor career best for the Tulsa senior. The mark also bypassed the NCAA provisional standard, the second time he has done that in as many meets. Leslie Dunlap finished fourth in the women's collegiate elite division with an OU career best vault of 13-1.5. It also bypassed the NCAA provisional standard, the second time for her to do so this season, and was better than the mark she posted as a frehsman to qualify for the 2001 NCAA Indoor Championships. Junior Michael Westlund cleared 16-7, freshman Lindsey Bourne set an OU career best with a vault of 11-9.5 and redshirt freshman Jamie Lillie recorded a 10-2. Brett Corlett did not clear the opening height and Robin Hanna was injured prior to the competition. Kurt Hanna finished in the top five of men's elite division competition with an 18-0.

Last Year
Former Sooner Alesha Peel led a record-setting performance at the 2001 Oklahoma Track Classic. The senior posted an NCAA provisional qualifying mark, one of 15 recorded in the meet. She later went on to earn All-America honors in the 60-meter hurdles at the 2001 NCAA Indoor Championships. Peel was one of 12 student-athletes to set meet records in the Classic and four facility records were set as well. Other Sooner winners included Sand
