NORMAN – Saturday marked the return of the Oklahoma football team's spring game after a one-year hiatus, and the Red team earned a 31-3 victory over the White team in front of a crowd of 31,407 at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.
The Red team, quarterbacked primarily by John Mateer, scored four touchdowns and a field goal in the first half. The Sooners played a traditional 60-minute game with standard timing in the first quarter and a running clock for the final three periods.
Mateer completed 12 of 19 passes for 192 yards, including a 3-yard touchdown to redshirt sophomore transfer receiver Mackenzie Alleyne for the final score of the contest. Junior transfer running back Lloyd Avant led the Red team with 69 rushing yards on 14 carries. He scored on a 3-yard rush on the game's opening drive.
The White team got on the board on its second possession with a 50-yard field goal by redshirt freshman Liam Evans. Freshman Jonathan Hatton Jr. scored the game's second touchdown on a 12-yard rush on the following possession. He rushed for 26 yards on six carries in the contest.
Redshirt senior kicker Tate Sandell, the reigning Lou Groza Award winner, converted a 39-yard field goal on his only attempt of the day to make the score 17-3 in favor of the Red team. He made all four of his PAT attempts.
Freshman DeZephen Walker made the score 24-3 with his 17-yard touchdown run, dragging defenders the final eight yards into the end zone. He finished with eight rushes for 81 yards (10.1 average), which included a 37-yarder on his first carry.
Redshirt sophomore quarterback Whitt Newbauer completed 7 of 9 passes for 69 yards for the White team. Freshman Jahsiear Rogers led all White team receivers with five receptions for 70 yards.
Red team tight ends Rocky Beers and Hayden Hansen, both redshirt senior transfers, combined to total seven receptions for 99 yards. Beers notched four catches for 65 yards while Hansen nabbed three balls for 34 yards. Redshirt senior wide receiver Isaiah Sategna III registered a 50-yard grab-and-run and sophomore wide receiver Manny Choice logged a 25-yard catch on the game's first drive.
The Red team notched two interceptions, one by senior defensive back Peyton Bowen and one by redshirt junior defensive back Casen Calmus.
Sophomore defensive back Omarion Robinson, redshirt freshman defensive backs Trystan Haynes and Barrett Travis and freshman defensive back Niko Jandreau each tallied a game-high seven tackles for the White team. Robinson added a forced fumble and a pass breakup and Haynes tallied a tackle for loss. Freshman defensive linemen Brian Harris and James Carrington each recorded a sack for the White team.
Junior defensive back Michael Boganowski paced the Red squad with six tackles, including a sack, while sophomore cornerback Courtland Guillory made five tackles (two for loss) and redshirt sophomore defensive linemen Danny Okoye (two TFLs) and Nigel Smith II (one TFL) each notched four tackles. The Red team compiled six tackles for loss, three pass breakups and three QB hurries.
