KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 19 Oklahoma women's tennis team earned a statement victory Friday evening, taking down No. 7 Tennessee, 4-3, in a tightly contested battle at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.
The win snapped a two-match skid for the Sooners (11-4, 2-2 SEC) and marked Oklahoma's second top-10 victory of the season. The victory also marked the 250th career head coaching win for Audra Cohen, spanning her tenures at North Florida and Oklahoma.
Oklahoma once again started strong in doubles, claiming its 14th doubles point in 15 matches this season. The duo of Julia Garcia Ruiz and Salakthip Ounmuang opened the scoring with a dominant 6-0 victory over Maeve Thornton and Leyla Britez Risso at court three, improving to 9-2 together on the year.
No. 37 Edda Mamedova and Evialina Laskevich followed with a 6-4 win over Catherine Aulia and Katrina Scott at the No. 2 position to clinch the early advantage. The freshman tandem improved to 5-1 in spring doubles with the victory.
In singles play, Gloriana Nahum quickly doubled the Oklahoma lead with a commanding 6-0, 6-3 victory over Saray Yli-Piipari at court six, giving the sophomore her eighth singles win of the spring.
Tennessee responded with two straight victories to even the team score at 2-2, as No. 20 Britez Risso defeated No. 30 Garcia Ruiz at court three and No. 74 Aulia rallied past Chloé Noël at court four.
No. 71 Laskevich pushed the Sooners back in front with a gritty comeback at the top court. After dropping the opening set, the freshman battled back to defeat Scott, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, giving Oklahoma a 3-2 advantage.
The Lady Volunteers answered once again when No. 105 Francesca Mattioli outlasted Ounmuang in three sets at court five, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, leveling the match at 3-3.
The dual ultimately came down to court two, where freshman Edda Mamedova delivered the clinching point for the Sooners. In a back-and-forth battle, the No. 63-ranked Mamedova defeated Vanesa Suarez, 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-1, sealing Oklahoma's upset victory.
Nahum and Mamedova now share the team lead with eight singles wins this spring.
