NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's gymnastics team swept the weekly MPSF conference awards, as fifth year senior Brigham Frentheway was named Gymnast of the Week, freshman Sasha Bogonosiuk was named Freshman of the Week and freshman Nathan Roman was named Specialist of the Week, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation announced Wednesday. Bogonosiuk was also named the CGA national Rookie of the Week.
The trio led the Sooners to the highest team score in the nation this season (331.300) in a win over No. 3 Nebraska (321.150) on Saturday at McCasland Field House.
Frentheway set season highs on all four of his events. He placed second on floor exercise with a stuck 13.850 in his first floor routine of the season and posted a 13.500 on still rings. The Cheyenne, Wyo., product then added a 14.100 on vault in the anchor position and stuck his dismount on horizontal bar for a 13.750. Frentheway is ranked fifth nationally on floor (13.850).
Bogonosiuk tied his career high on vault with a stuck 14.450 to win the event title. His execution score of 9.550 on vault was the highest of any routine in the meet. He also scored a 13.750 on floor exercise to place third and posted a career-high 13.800 on parallel bars. Bogonosiuk's execution score on parallel bars (9.200) ranked second on the event by 0.050. He recorded sticks on all three events he competed and claimed his second straight vault title. The Buffalo Grove, Ill., product is ranked third nationally on vault (14.230), eighth on floor exercise (13.720) and 10th in the all-around (77.675).
Roman, who is from Poway, Calif., registered the nation's highest score on parallel bars with a career-high 14.650 to win the event title. He earned a 9.250 execution score on a 5.4 difficulty on the routine. Saturday's competition marked Roman's first appearance for the Sooners since Jan. 24 against Michigan. The Poway, Calif., product is ranked second nationally on parallel bars with a 14.188 average.
This is Frentheway's third career MPSF weekly award and first of the season, Bogonosiuk's second MPSF award of the season and the first of Roman's career.
OU has now won nine MPSF and six CGA weekly awards this season. Redshirt senior Fuzzy Benas was named MPSF Gymnast of the Week on Feb.10 and MPSF Specialist of the Week on Feb. 3. Redshirt freshman Colby Aranda won MPSF Freshman of the Week and junior Tyler Flores won MPSF Specialist of the Week on Feb. 10. Redshirt junior Leo Koike was named MPSF Gymnast of the Week and Benas earned MPSF Specialist of the Week honors on Feb. 3, while Bogonosiuk was named MPSF Freshman of the Week on Jan. 20.
Bogonosiuk was also named CGA Rookie of the Week on Jan. 22, Roman was named CGA Rookie of the Week on Jan. 28, redshirt senior Fuzzy Benas was named CGA Gymnast of the Week on Feb. 11 and Specialist of the Week on Feb. 4 and redshirt freshman Colby Aranda was named CGA Rookie of the Week on Feb. 11.
Oklahoma returns to McCasland Field House next Saturday, March 7, for its home finale against No. 8 California. The Senior Night meet is set to begin at 6 p.m. CT, with introductions at 5:45 p.m. It will be Student Groups Night, featuring a visor giveaway. OU will honor its seniors following the meet.
