NORMAN – Oklahoma men's gymnastics freshman Nathan Roman was named the CGA National Rookie of the Week following his performance in Oklahoma's win over No. 8 California, the College Gymnastics Association announced Wednesday.
Roman's performance led the No. 1 Sooners to their highest road team score this season (325.250) in a win over No. 8 California (315.100) on Saturday in Berkeley, Calif.
Roman won the parallel bars title with a 14.250. He also scored a 13.900 on vault, a 12.800 on still rings and a 12.750 on floor exercise. His parallel bars score was 0.350 higher than the next-highest mark in the meet, and his vault score tied his career high on the event. Roman's still rings routine was the first of his collegiate career, and he stuck his dismount. The Poway, California, product ranks first nationally on parallel bars with a 14.200 four-score average.
This is Roman's second CGA National Rookie of the Week honor this season, as he previously earned the honor on Jan. 28.
OU has now won eight CGA weekly awards this season. Sophomore Francisco Velez Belendez was named CGA Co-Specialist of the Week on March 11, and freshman Sasha Bogonosiuk earned CGA Rookie of the Week honors on March 4 and Jan. 22. Redshirt senior Fuzzy Benas was named CGA Gymnast of the Week on Feb. 11 and Specialist of the Week on Feb. 4, while redshirt freshman Colby Aranda earned CGA Rookie of the Week honors on Feb. 11.
Oklahoma takes a week off from competition before returning to Berkeley, Calif., for the MPSF Championship on Saturday, April 4, hosted by California. The conference championship meet is set to begin at 6 p.m. CT.
