NORMAN — Oklahoma men's gymnastics junior Tas Hajdu was named the MPSF Specialist of the Week and freshman Nathan Roman was named the conference Freshman of the Week, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation announced Tuesday.
The duo led the Sooners to their highest road team score this season (325.250) in a win over No. 8 California (315.100) on Saturday in Berkeley, Calif.
Hajdu scored a career-high 13.900 on parallel bars to place second on the event. The Las Vegas, Nev., product also scored 13.550 on still rings to finish second. His 5.2 difficulty score on parallel bars and 4.9 difficulty score on still rings were both the second-highest marks on the events. Hajdu ranks 10th nationally on still rings with a 13.750 four-score average and 14th on parallel bars with a 13.483 four-score average.
Roman won the parallel bars title with a 14.250. He also scored 13.900 on vault, 12.800 on still rings and 12.750 on floor exercise. His parallel bars score was 0.350 higher than the next-highest mark in the meet and vault score tied his career high on the event. Roman's still rings routine was the first of his collegiate career, and he stuck his dismount. The Poway, Calif., product ranks first nationally on parallel bars with a 14.200 four-score average.
This is Hajdu's first career MPSF weekly award and this is Roman's second conference weekly award of the season.
OU has now won 13 MPSF weekly awards this season. Senior Ignacio Yockers earned MPSF Gymnast of the Week honors and sophomore Francisco Velez Belendez won MPSF Specialist of the Week on March 10. Fifth-year senior Brigham Frentheway was named MPSF Gymnast of the Week on March 4 and Roman won MPSF Specialist of the Week on March 4. Freshman Sasha Bogonosiuk earned MPSF Freshman of the Week honors on March 4 and Jan. 20. Redshirt senior Fuzzy Benas was named MPSF Gymnast of the Week on Feb. 10 and MPSF Specialist of the Week on Feb. 3. Redshirt freshman Colby Aranda won MPSF Freshman of the Week and junior Tyler Flores won MPSF Specialist of the Week on Feb. 10. Redshirt junior Leo Koike was named MPSF Gymnast of the Week on Feb. 3.
Oklahoma takes a week off from competition before returning to Berkeley, Calif., for the MPSF Championship on Saturday, April 4, hosted by California. The conference championship meet is set to begin at 6 p.m. CT.
