Koike, Benas Win MPSF Weekly Awards

NORMAN – Oklahoma men's gymnastics redshirt junior Leo Koike was named the MPSF Gymnast of the Week and redshirt senior Fuzzy Benas was named the conference Specialist of the Week after their performance in leading the Sooners to a win over Greenville on Sunday afternoon, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation announced Tuesday.

Koike made his season debut on Sunday, competing in four events for the Sooners. He posted a 14.150 on vault to earn second place, posting a 9.450 execution score. He tied for third on floor exercise with a 13.650, claimed third on horizontal bar with a 13.100 and scored a 13.100 on parallel bars. Koike, who is from Saitama, Japan, is ranked eighth nationally on both floor exercise (13.650) and vault (14.150).

Benas took home individual event titles in both of his events on Sunday. He posted a season high 14.050 on high bar, which was .600 away from the next closest score. He also scored a 13.500 on parallel bars in his debut routine on that event this season.

This is Koike's first career MPSF weekly award. This is Benas' first conference weekly award of the season and the sixth of his career. OU has now won three MPSF weekly awards this season. Freshman Sasha Bogonosiuk was named MPSF Freshman of the week on Jan. 20.

Oklahoma will host Ohio State and Air Force on Saturday, Feb. 7 at McCasland Field House. The meet is set to begin at 6 p.m. CT, with introductions at 5:45 p.m. It is OU's annual Cleveland Night, featuring students and families from Norman's Cleveland Elementary School. Feb. 6-8 is also OU Gymnastics Alumni Weekend when the Sooners will welcome back alumni from both the men's and women's programs. Festivities will include a petting zoo, face painting and a t-shirt giveaway.
