WBB Game Preview: Women's Hoops Looks for Road Win at Auburn on Sunday

January 24, 2026 | Women's Basketball

NORMAN — No. 16 Oklahoma (15-4, 3-3 SEC) looks to win its second game in a row on Sunday when it travels east to face Auburn (13-7, 2-4 SEC).

Tip is set for 1 p.m. CT at Neville Arena on SEC Network with Chuckie Kempf (pxp) and Brooke Weisbrod (analyst) calling the action. Fans can tune in on the Sooner Sports Radio Network (107.7 FM) with Brian Brinkley and Tyler Neal or listen in Spanish with Luis Rendon on Los Sooners Radio (1560 AM). Both radio broadcasts will also stream on the Varsity App.

Sunday's contest is OU's first against a team outside of the AP Top 25 since January 4. Oklahoma has dominated unranked opponents over the past two seasons, posting a 33-1 record with its lone loss coming on the road at Mississippi State last year. In those 34 games, the Sooners have outscored opponents by an average of 32.9 points and have won 22 straight against unranked foes, including a 13-0 mark in 2025-26. Sunday's matchup at Auburn is a Quad 2 game in the NET, where Oklahoma is 2-0 this season and has not suffered a Q2 loss since March 2024.

LAST TIME OUT

No. 16 Oklahoma (15-4, 3-3 SEC) knocked off No. 2 South Carolina (19-2, 5-1 SEC), 94-82, in overtime Thursday night at Lloyd Noble Center. The win marked OU's third all-time victory over a top-two opponent and its first since a 66-63 win over then-No. 2 Kansas State on Jan. 31, 2024. After trailing by eight late in the first half and seven at the break, Oklahoma seized control in the third quarter, outscoring the reigning SEC champions 25-16 to take a two-point lead into the final period. South Carolina erased a six-point Sooner advantage late, but a Raegan Beers putback with 18 seconds remaining and a defensive stop forced overtime. OU improved to 14-0 when leading after three quarters, and the eight-point deficit was its largest overcome in a win this season.

True freshman Aaliyah Chavez led all scorers with 26 points and took over in overtime, scoring 15 points on a perfect 5 of 5 shooting with four 3-pointers to seal the win. Chavez added a career-high eight assists in the nationally televised ESPN contest. She became the first freshman since Caitlin Clark in 2021 to post 26 points and eight assists against a top-25 opponent, and her 15 overtime points set a school record. Oklahoma improved to 5-1 in overtime games under head coach Jennie Baranczyk

THE FAST BREAK

• The Oklahoma offense continues to rank among the nation's elite, sitting second nationally in scoring at 90.0 points per game. The Sooners' starting five also ranks second in the country at 70.5 points per game, with all five starters averaging double figures. Oklahoma is among the national leaders across multiple offensive categories, including pace (78.9, 1st), scoring offense (90.0 PPG, 2nd), second-chance points (16.9, 4th), fast-break points (18.7, 4th), assists (21.2, 4th), paint points (45.4, 4th) and offensive rating (110.8, 23rd).

• The Sooner defense has established itself among the nation's best, leading the NCAA in opponent field goal percentage at 32.0%. The Sooners hold opponents 12.1% below their season shooting average and 13.1 points under their scoring norm, ranking seventh nationally in defensive rating (78.0). OU allows just 21.6 paint points per game (10th NCAA) and applies pressure at every level, forcing over 11.0 steals per game and ranking 11th in blocks per game (5.8). Only two teams this season – Florida State and NC State – have scored above their season scoring average against the Sooners.

• One of the nation's top duos, freshman guard Aaliyah Chavez and senior All-American center Raegan Beers are both Wooden Award midseason top-25 finalists. The pair combines to average 35.9 points per game, ranked sixth among all Power Five duos and second in the SEC, trailing only Florida. Chavez or Beers has led Oklahoma in scoring in 14 games this season, and the Sooners are 12-2 when one of the two is the team's leading scorer. When the duo combines for at least 35 points, OU is 10-1, with the lone loss coming against No. 18 Ole Miss.

• Baranczyk's teams are built for offense and the numbers back it up. Under her leadership, Oklahoma has scored 90+ points 51 times (2nd most in NCAA since 21-22) and is 48-3 in those contests, with all three losses coming against top-15 opponents. The Sooners have reached the 100-point mark 17 times under Baranczyk, the third-most nationally since 2021, including a program record six times this season.

• The Southeastern Conference is once again proving why it's the premier league in women's basketball. Half of the preseason AP top 10 featured SEC teams, including the then-sixth-ranked Sooners. In the latest AP poll, the SEC landed nine teams in the top 25 and four of the top six.
