NORMAN – The Oklahoma volleyball team dropped its first match of SEC play, falling in five sets to Ole Miss, 26-24, 17-25, 27-25, 23-25, 9-15, Sunday afternoon inside McCasland Field House.
Oklahoma (9-3, 1-1 SEC) found themselves in just their third five-set match of the season. Despite a season high 16.5 blocks, OU couldn't capitalize on Ole Miss (9-4, 1-1 SEC) errors in the loss.
Alexis Shelton had the second double-double of the season for the Sooners, leading the way with 17 kills, 13 digs and four blocks. Fellow pin Emoni Bush added 11 kills, five digs and four blocks, while middle Kelli Jo Burgess tallied 10 kills and recorded a career-high eight blocks.
At setter, Avaya Maga recorded 24 assists and nine digs while Harper Hall chipped in 16 assists and six digs. Dionii Fraga finished with 13 digs to go with six assists.
The opening frame was a back-and-forth battle, with Ole Miss holding a 15-13 edge at the media timeout. OU answered with two quick points to even the score and the teams continued to trade leads until the Sooners capitalized on a pair of Rebel errors to go up 20-18. After the Rebels inched ahead 24-23, Barnes kept the Sooners alive, and Burgess followed with a key kill for set point. A Rebel miscue sealed it as OU took the opener, 26-24.
The Sooners opened the second frame with a 9-6 lead to force an Ole Miss timeout. A 5-1 run from the Rebels put Ole Miss in front 11-10. After an OU timeout, the Rebels used a 12-3 run to take a 20-13 advantage and never looked back to win 25-17.
OU grabbed a quick 5-2 lead in the third, but Ole Miss answered to go up 10-8. The Sooners responded with a 5-0 run out of a timeout to reclaim the edge, 13-10. The Rebels rallied to tie it at 15, but OU was the first to 20 and held a 22-20 advantage heading into an Ole Miss timeout. The Rebels pulled even again at 23, before Gibson's fourth kill set up set point. Ole Miss fended off two chances for OU to put the set away, but a kill from Shelton followed by a Rebel error closed it out, 27-25, giving OU the set.
At the media timeout of the fourth set, the Rebels held a 15-12 advantage. An upheld call after a Rebel challenge put OU within one at 17-16 and Bush's 10th kill tied the set. The Sooners took their first lead since 4-3 off a kill from Shelton at 22-20. A 5-1 run by the Rebels gave them the set, 25-23, to force a deciding fifth.
At the switch, the Rebels led 8-4 as the Sooners struggled with errors early in the fifth set. OU pulled within three at 7-4 but couldn't overcome the Rebel offense as they closed out the final frame, 15-9.
The first conference road swing of the season is this weekend as the Sooners travel to Vanderbilt on Oct. 3 and Missouri on Oct. 5.
