September 22, 2025 | Football

NORMAN — University of Oklahoma senior defensive lineman R Mason Thomas was named SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week and redshirt junior punter Grayson Miller was named SEC Special Teams Player of the Week after OU's 24-17 win over No. 22 Auburn on Saturday at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, the conference office announced Monday.

Thomas played only the second half and finished the day with a season-high four tackles (all solo) and 2.0 sacks. His second sack was a game-sealing safety that made the score 24-17 with 1:06 remaining in the fourth quarter. His first sack came on the second play of the second half (his second play of the game after he sat out the first half due to a penalty from OU's previous contest). He also made a downfield tackle at the OU 33-yard line on a 44-yard third-quarter rush by Auburn running back Jeremiah Cobb to potentially save a touchdown. The possession ended with a missed 50-yard field goal attempt. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., product entered the game with three total tackles (one for loss) and no sacks in his first three contests this season. The Sooners tied a school record with nine sacks in Saturday's game.

Miller averaged 54.4 yards on his five punts with a long of 66, three of 50-plus yards and one downed inside the 20-yard line on Saturday. His 54.4-yard punting average (punts went for 47, 66, 52, 58 and 49 yards) is the third best in school history (minimum five punts), and his 66-yard punt in the second quarter was OU's longest since the 2022 season. The Edmond, Okla., product and University of Central Oklahoma transfer has handled OU's punting duties for each of the last three games. He has averaged 51.0 yards on his 13 punts, with seven of 50-plus yards, five downed inside the 20-yard line, three fair catches and only one touchback.

This is Thomas' second career SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week award and first this year, and Miller's first SEC weekly honor. OU has won four SEC awards this season. Redshirt junior quarterback John Mateer was named SEC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 8 and freshman running back Tory Blaylock was named SEC Freshman of the Week on Sept. 15.

No. 7/10 Oklahoma (4-0, 1-0) is off this week before hosting Kent State (1-3, 0-1 MAC) on Saturday, Oct. 4 at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. CT on SEC Network.
