NORMAN – Emoni Bush had a career-high 20 kills and the Oklahoma volleyball team hit an impressive .421 to sweep St. Mary's College, 25-19, 25-20, 25-21, Saturday night.
The Sooners improved to 7-1 on the season while SMC dropped to 1-7 overall.
Bush hit .800 on the night, also a career high, as she was just shy of the OU program record for kills in a three-set match (23). Bush's 20 kills came on 25 swings with no errors.
Alexis Shelton chipped in 14 kills at a .345 rate with four digs and four blocks.
Kamille Gibson added nine kills as the offense notched 52 kills as a team, just three shy of the three-set program record (55).
Kelli Jo Burgess provided a defensive spark with 7.5 blocks on the night as the team tallied 9.5. Setters
Avaya Maga and
Harper Hall had identical stat lines with 19 kills and five digs each.
A 25-19 first set victory gave OU the 1-0 advantage heading into the second set. The Sooners hit .375 in the opening frame behind six kills at a .857 clip from Bush. OU raced out to a 12-6 lead before allowing the Gaels to climb back in it at 16-all. An 8-2 run gave OU set point and a kill from Gibson secured the opening frame.
The Sooners hit .567 in the second set with 19 kills as they won the frame 25-20. Shelton tallied seven kills in the set, while Bush added another six to lead the offense. Neither team established a significant lead in the set until the Sooners pulled ahead 22-18 late. Shelton notched back-to-back kills to close the frame as OU took a 2-0 advantage.
Two pivotal challenges swung the third set in favor of the Sooners. Seemingly down 10-8, head coach
Aaron Mansfield challenged an out-of-bounds call to reverse the score to 9-9. Just a few points later, Mansfield challenged a touch on an attack from
Tekoa Barnes to give the Sooners the 12-11 lead. SMC took a 13-12 lead on two quick points after the challenge and a 5-0 Oklahoma run forced the Gaels to call timeout. Up 18-14, OU weathered a 5-2 SMC run making it a one-point game at 20-19. A kill from Shelton set up match point and a Gael attack error allowed OU to take the set, 25-21.
OU will host Central Arkansas on Thursday, Sept. 18, at 5 p.m. for the final non-conference home game of the season.
