NORMAN — No. 23 Ole Miss avoided the sweep with a 7-3 Sunday win vs. No. 21 Oklahoma in Norman.
OU (32-14, 13-11 SEC) struck first in the first inning, plating one on an RBI single off the hot bat of junior Easton Carmichael. Sophomore Jason Walk led off with his second triple of the season before Carmichael plated him for his fourth RBI of the series.
Ole Miss (33-15, 13-11) tied the game at the top of the second on a leadoff home run from Austin Fawley, his second in as many games vs. the Sooners.
The Rebels plated a pair in the third to take their first lead of the series. After a leadoff double and OU error, an RBI single to right from Luke Hill pushed the first run of the inning across. Following a pair of strikeouts, a second error of the frame on the Sooners allowed an unearned run to cross to make it 3-1 after three.
In the fourth, an RBI single from Mitchell Sanford pushed the Ole Miss lead to three runs before OU got one back in the home half on an RBI single from Walk to make it 4-2.
The lead ballooned to five runs through the top of seventh. In the fifth, a fielder's choice RBI from Judd Utermark followed by an RBI single from Hayden Federico scored two. At the top of the seventh, after a Fawley leadoff double, center fielder Isaac Humphrey plated him on a single to right.
OU got one back in the home half of the seventh. Walk ripped his second triple of the game up the alley in right field and got home on a sacrifice fly from junior Trey Gambill. Walk tied a program single-game record with his two triples on Sunday, a feat that hasn't been accomplished since Casey Johnson did it vs. Kansas in 2011.
A scoreless eighth and ninth ensued with Ole Miss pitching putting the Sooners down in order each inning to salvage the series with a Sunday win.
At the plate, Walk paced OU with a 3-for-4 day with one RBI.
OU starting right-handed pitcher Malachi Witherspoon went 4.2 innings and struck out seven, surrendering five earned runs on seven hits with one walk. OU utilized six relief pitchers in the game with all six registering at least one strikeout. Senior righty Reid Hensley paced the group with a pair of K's.
The Sooners enter the final two weekends of the regular season, starting with a road series at Kentucky, May 9-11, before hosting Red River rival Texas May 15-17.
