NORMAN — No. 10 Oklahoma dropped Friday night's contest to No. 7 LSU, 10-2.
The Sooners (23-7, 5-6 SEC) fell in consecutive games for the first time this season as LSU (29-3, 9-2 SEC) took the series with the win.
LSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second on a pair of RBI doubles and a single. The Sooners responded in the third inning with a pair of runs on an RBI single from junior Trey Gambill and double from sophomore Jaxon Willits. In Gambill's first game back from injury the junior finished 1-for-2 with an RBI, run scored and two walks drawn.
The Tigers scored the final six runs of the game, putting up single runs in the sixth and seventh before a four-spot in the ninth.
In the sixth, a solo home run from Josh Pearson pushed the Tiger lead to three runs before an error in the seventh allowed another run to cross and make it 6-2 after seven.
The Tigers padded their lead and eventual victory with a four-run ninth. A leadoff home run from Daniel Dickinson started the flurry, followed by Josh Pearson's second long ball of the game three batters later. The scoring ended with a two-run double to left field to bring the final to 10-2.
OU starting left-handed pitcher Cade Crossland (L, 1-2) took his second loss of the season, going five innings and surrendering five runs on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts. OU's bullpen arms of Reid Hensley (0.1 IP), Beau Sampson (0.2), Michael Catalano (1.1), Jaden Barfield (0.2), Jackson Kircher (0.2) and Brandon Cain (0.1) closed the contest with Catalano fanning a pair to Kircher and Cain's one. It was Cain's first appearance on the mound as a Sooner as the outfielder saw time as a pitcher at the junior college level.
At the plate, five Sooners recorded OU's five hits in the contest with Gambill and Willits bringing in the two OU runs. It was Willits' six game of the last seven with a run batted in.
The teams meet for the series finale on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT. The matchup can be seen via SECN+ and heard in Oklahoma on 99.3 FM/1400 AM The REF or nationwide on The Varsity Network app.
