NORMAN – Center fielder Jason Walk went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and first baseman Dayton Tockey went 3-for-3 and drove in a run to lead No. 19 Oklahoma to a 9-4 win over No. 17 Vanderbilt Friday evening at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
The Sooners (24-9, 6-7 SEC) jumped on the board with four runs in the first inning, then tacked on three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth, nearly doubling their scoring output over their previous four games.
Starter Cade Crossland (2-2) notched a career-high eight strikeouts over 5.2 innings and allowed just one earned run, two walks and five hits. James Hitt pitched 2.1 in relief, striking out four, and Michael Catalano threw the ninth to close the game. Starter JD Thompson (2-3) went 5.0 innings and took the loss for the Commodores (25-9, 7-6 SEC).
Right fielder Sam Christiansen doubled down the right field line, plating shortstop Jaxon Willits for the first run of the game. Walk then tripled home two runs and scored on an RBI groundout by designated hitter Drew Dickerson.
Vanderbilt scored one run in the third, sixth and seventh innings to cut OU's lead to 4-3. Designated hitter Mac Rose singled in a run in the top of the third inning and catcher Colin Barczi reached on an error in the fifth that allowed shortstop Jonathan Vastine to score from second base. Right fielder Jacob Humphrey hit a solo home run to right in the sixth.
Willits led off the bottom of the seventh with a homer to left to make the score 5-3. Walk, who hit a two-out single, stole third as part of a double steal with Dickerson and scored on a passed ball on the same play. Tockey then doubled home Dickerson to extend the lead to 7-3.
Third baseman Dawson Willis led off the bottom of the eighth with a single, stole second and scored on a base hit to center by left fielder Trey Gambill. After a single to center by Willits, Willis scored on a wild pitch. The Commodores added a run on a sacrifice fly by left fielder Rustan Rigdon in the ninth inning.
The Sooners tallied 13 hits – five for extra bases – and five stolen bases, and the pitching staff totaled 12 strikeouts. Gambill and Willits both went 2-for-4 with an RBI at the top of the order.
