NORMAN — No. 13 Oklahoma completed the three-game sweep over Sam Houston with a pair of wins Sunday.
The Sooners took the first game of the day 7-3 before a 9-7 (7 innings) comeback win in the finale.
The offense was powered by a combined three home runs on the day from juniors Easton Carmichael and Dawson Willis and sophomore Jaxon Willits. The pitching staff utilized nine arms on the day. Sophomore starter Cameron Johnson struck out a career-high eight and earned the win in the first game before sophomore reliever Gavyn Jones got his first win of the season in game two.
Oklahoma moved to 14-1 with the series sweep over the Bearkats (3-12).
After starting left-handed pitcher Cam Johnson surrendered a leadoff single in the first inning, he proceeded to retire five of his next six batters by strikeout into the third inning. The OU offense put one run on the board in the home half of the first as sophomore Jason Walk raced home on a passed ball after drawing a leadoff walk.
The Bearkats tied the game at the top of the third on an RBI single before OU responded with three runs in the bottom half. Willits launched his fourth homer of the season on a solo shot prior to an RBI double from Carmichael and sacrifice fly RBI courtesy of redshirt sophomore Sam Christiansen to put OU up three.
Sam Houston responded with a solo run at the top of the fourth by way of an RBI single. After a scoreless fifth, Oklahoma plated two in the sixth on back-to-back RBI doubles from Willis and fellow junior Dayton Tockey.
Single runs were exchanged in the seventh and eighth as SHSU plated their third run of the game via single in the seventh before Willis homered in the OU half of the eighth. It was the junior's first home run as a Sooner and pushed OU to a final of 7-3.
Johnson moved to 2-0 on the mound this season, finishing with a career-high eight strikeouts while allowing two runs on four hits and two walks in five innings. Relievers Michael Catalano (1.0 IP), Jaden Barfield (0.2), James Hitt (1.0) and Reid Hensley (1.1) combined to close the game with Catalano and Hensley fanning a pair to Barfield's one.
The teams turned around for the second game of the doubleheader approximately 45 minutes later, scheduled for seven innings. OU broke through early on a sac-fly RBI from Willits in the bottom of the first before Sam Houston scored five across the next three innings.
The Bearkats tied the game on a wild pitch in the second before a pair of sacrifice flies in the second gave them the lead and a two-run homer in the fourth pushed their lead to 5-1.
The Sooners erased the deficit in the home half of the fourth, plating seven runs on six hits. A pair of freshmen got the rally started with Kyle Branch drawing a walk and Drew Dickerson hitting a single to right. Six of the next seven OU batters brought in runs, starting with an RBI single from senior Scott Mudler. Willis followed him with an RBI double, followed by a game-tying two-run single from Walk. Two batters later, Carmichael singled a run home through the right side to take the lead. A Willits RBI groundout and RBI single from Christiansen concluded the OU outburst to put OU up 8-5 after four.
SHSU responded with two runs in the sixth to pull within one run before Carmichael launched his team-leading fifth home run of the season in the home half of the sixth to bring the final to 9-7, OU.
Senior closer Dylan Crooks stranded one in the seventh and earned his fifth save of the season.
Sophomore reliever Gavyn Jones earned his first win as a Sooner, going 1.1 innings and surrendering no runs or walks and just two hits with one strikeout. Starting right-handed pitcher Malachi Witherspoon went 3.2 innings and surrendered a season-high five runs on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Sophomore righty Jason Bodin (0.2) and Crooks combined to finish the contest with Crooks striking out two to Bodin's one.
The Sooners cap a four-game homestand on Wednesday as the team welcomes Louisiana Tech (9-7) for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The game can be seen via SECN+ and heard in Oklahoma on 99.3 FM/1400 AM The REF or nationwide on The Varsity Network app.
