NORMAN — No. 12 Oklahoma beat Louisiana Tech by a final of 9-5 Wednesday evening at L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman.
OU (15-1) threw seven pitchers on the night with five registering at least one strikeout, led by starting LHP Cade Crossland's four K's in two innings. The offense was powered by a two-run home run from redshirt sophomore Sam Christiansen and a three-hit night from sophomore Jaxon Willits.
Following a scoreless first that saw Crossland strand a runner on third and a top of the second where he struck out the side, Oklahoma plated five runs on four hits in the home half of the second.
Christiansen hit his second home run of the year on a two-run shot to center that bounced off the top of the outfield wall before an RBI single from Tockey scored the third run of the inning. Three batters later, sophomore Jason Walk brought one across on a groundout prior to a RBI single from junior Trey Gambill closed the OU scoring in the frame.
The Bulldogs (9-8) pushed their first run across at the top of the third via double before Oklahoma plated a pair in the home half. A bases-loaded walk drawn by senior Scott Mudler and sacrifice fly RBI from junior Dawson Willis brought the score to 7-1.
Oklahoma scored two in fourth on RBI singles from Willits and freshman Kyle Branch to bring the lead to 9-1. A scoreless fifth ensued before Louisiana Tech plated the final four runs across the sixth, eighth and ninth innings with three RBI singles and a groundout to bring the final to 9-5.
Willits paced OU at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Eight Sooners registered runs batted in on the night while five had hits in the game.
On the mound, the starter Crossland went two scoreless innings and surrendered just one hit and no walks to go with four strikeouts. Relievers Gavyn Jones (2.0 IP), Beau Sampson (1.1), Jackson Kircher (1.2), Reid Hensley (0.2), Jacob Gholston (0.1) and Jaden Barfield combined to close the game. Sampson struck out three, Jones fanned a pair while Hensley and Gholston struck out one each.
The Sooners play their first conference series as members of the SEC this weekend in Columbia, S.C., March 14-16 at South Carolina. The three-game series can be seen via SECN+ and heard in Oklahoma on 99.3 FM/1400 AM The REF or nationwide on The Varsity Network app.
