NORMAN — No. 13 Oklahoma took game one of the three-game set, 6-5, Friday night over Sam Houston, highlighted by a career-high tying 12 strikeouts from starting pitcher Kyson Witherspoon.
The Sooners moved to 12-1 with the victory, their 10th consecutive series-opening victory dating back to last season. Witherspoon was again the star, collecting his fourth win in four starts this season while striking out 12 with two walks and one unearned run on one hit in five innings. From the first through fifth innings Witherspoon struck out 10 consecutive Bearkat batters.
After a scoreless first three innings, Oklahoma broke through in the fourth on a solo home run to right from junior Easton Carmichael. It was Carmichael's team-leading fourth of the season and first since Feb. 22.
The Bearkats (3-10) tied the game at top of the fifth on a fielder's choice before the Sooners retook the lead in the home half with two runs on three hits. Following a double from sophomore Dasan Harris, back-to-back RBI doubles from sophomore Jaxon Willits and junior Trey Gambill pushed OU's lead to 3-1.
The Sooners extended their lead to four runs in the sixth inning with another pair of runs. Following an error that allowed junior Dayton Tockey to reach and a single from junior Dawson Willis, Harris ripped a two-run single through the right side.
The teams exchanged runs in the seventh as Sam Houston plated one on a sacrifice fly before an RBI single from redshirt sophomore Sam Christiansen got OU the run back.
The Bearkats made a late rally in the ninth with three runs on three hits before OU senior closer Dylan Crooks induced a groundout to give the Sooners the win and earn his fourth save of the season.
OU utilized James Hitt (2.0 IP), Jason Bodin (1.2) and Crooks (0.1) out of the bullpen with Bodin striking out a trio. Hitt surrendered one run on one hit with two walks, while Bodin gave up three runs on two hits with one walk.
Four Sooners had multi-hit days in Christiansen, Gambill, Harris and sophomore Jason Walk. Harris plated a pair while four other Sooners had one RBI.
The teams take Saturday off due to forecasted inclement weather in the Norman weather before a Sunday doubleheader starting at noon CT. The second game Sunday will be shortened to seven innings.
