TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — No. 9 Oklahoma's comeback attempt fell short in the series finale at No. 12 Alabama Sunday, 8-6.
After trailing 8-1 through four innings, Oklahoma (22-5, 5-4 SEC) scored the game's final five runs but couldn't mount a rally in the ninth and took its first series loss in SEC play.
OU got on the board with a single run in the first. After a pair of walks drawn by Jason Walk and Trey Gambill, sophomore Jaxon Willits ripped an RBI single through the right side to score one. The Crimson Tide limited the damage, leaving runners on the corners.
Alabama (25-4, 6-3 SEC) struck back in the home half of the first on a three-run home run from Jason Torres.
The Crimson Tide pushed its lead to four with single runs in the second and third. In the second, a run scored on a double play before a solo home run in the third made it 5-1.
Alabama scored three unearned runs in the fourth. A bases-loaded groundout followed by a two-run error ballooned the lead to 8-1 after four.
OU added one at the top of the fifth on an inside-the-park home run off the bat of Jason Walk. It was Walk's fourth home run of the season and OU's second inside-the-park homer.
The Sooners cut the deficit to four with a two-run seventh, scoring on a fielder's choice and RBI single from senior Brayden Horton.
Oklahoma continued its rally in the eighth, cutting the lead to two on a two-run home run from Dayton Tockey. It was the junior's fifth of the season and second of the series.
OU couldn't put a baserunner on to bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth as the Crimson Tide retired the side in order to earn the series win.
OU starting right-handed pitcher Malachi Witherspoon (L, 2-2) took the loss in five innings, surrendering five earned runs on seven hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
The OU bullpen of Michael Catalano, James Hitt and Reid Hensley combined for four scoreless innings to finish the game, with Catalano and Hitt each striking out one.
At the plate, the Sooners were paced by two-hit days from Willits and Sam Christiansen. Tockey led OU with two RBIs on his eighth inning homer.
Oklahoma returns to action Tuesday night in Frisco, Texas, as the Sooners take on Texas Tech in a neutral site, non-conference contest at Riders Field. The game is slated for a 6:30 p.m. CT start and can be seen via pay-per-view on Peak Events. Tickets are available via Peak.Events.
