PALM CITY, Fla. – Powered by a stellar runner-up finish from Jase Summy, No. 7 Oklahoma wrapped up the Valspar Intercollegiate Invitational in fourth place on Tuesday.
The Sooners (-21) finished behind three top-15 programs, as second-ranked Texas took home the team title at 36-under. Summy's 197 (-16) is tied for the fifth-lowest 54-hole score in program history.
Summy (T2, -16) was outstanding from start to finish, carding rounds of 65-64-68 at the par-71 Floridian National Golf Club. The Keller, Texas, native racked up 21 birdies on the week, including a bogey-free 64 in the second round. After a third-place finish last week at the Pauma Valley Invitational, Summy now boasts nine top-10 finishes in 31 career starts. His 197 also marks a new career low.
Ryder Cowan (T32, -2) joined Summy in red numbers, bouncing back from an opening-round 73 with rounds of 68 and 70 to finish 2-under for the tournament.
The rest of the Oklahoma lineup finished outside the top 40: Drew Goodman (+1) placed 44th, Clark Van Gaalen (+2) tied for 49th, and Matthew Troutman (+4) shared 57th.
OU's 63 birdies led the field, with Summy's 21 the most by any individual. Van Gaalen added 41 pars — second most among all competitors.
The Sooners topped seven top-25 teams in the standings, including No. 1 Auburn, who finished fifth — just one stroke back of Oklahoma.
North Carolina's David Ford, the top-ranked golfer in the country, won the event, defeating Summy by two strokes.
Next up, the Sooners head to Fort Worth for the Maridoe Collegiate, set for March 24-25.
