March 02, 2025 | Men's Golf
LAS VEGAS – Oklahoma men's golf wrapped up the first round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate in 10th place on Sunday, posting a 19-over at Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas.
Battling gusty desert winds, the Sooners (10, +19) were one of 14 teams to finish over par, with No. 2 Auburn (+1) the only team in the red after 18. True freshman Cameron Cheek was a bright spot for OU, carding a 1-over 73 to share 10th after day one.
Cheek, an Owasso, Okla., native, opened with birdies on Nos. 1 and 3 before playing his final 15 holes at 3-over. Making his lineup debut, the freshman is chasing his first career top-10 finish.
Asher Whitaker, a late addition to the lineup in place of Matthew Troutman due to illness, posted OU's second-best score of the day with a 3-over 75, placing him in a tie for 28th.
Jase Summy (T60, +7), Ryder Cowan (T66, +8) and Drew Goodman (T72, +9) rounded out the Sooners' lineup.
Auburn leads host UNLV by three strokes, while unranked New Mexico sits third at 5-over. No. 24 Pepperdine (+7) and No. 9 Virginia (+10) complete the top five.
In the individual race, UNLV's Caden Fioroni leads at 5-under (66), with only eight players finishing the par-72 track under par on Sunday.
Oklahoma will tee off in Monday's second round alongside Southern California (+16) and No. 11 Florida (+18).
The 15-team field includes nine top-25 programs and 13 inside the top 50 of the latest Clippd rankings.
Live scoring will be available via Clippd for the duration of the event.
