LONG BEACH, Calif. — With two outs in the top of the 11th inning,
Abigale Dayton roped the game-winning RBI double to left center, scoring
Isabela Emerling as a defensive battle between No. 2 Oklahoma Softball (6-0) and Long Beach State (3-1) finished in a 2-0 win for the Sooners Sunday, Feb. 9.
Dayton took a run away from LBSU earlier in the game, making a diving catch in the fourth inning on a ball headed to the gap with a runner on base. The Sooners turned three double plays in the game and got 11-scoreless frames from the efforts of
Kierston Deal,
Paytn Monticelli and
Isabella Smith. Deal worked a no-hitter into the seventh inning, taking the no-decision, while Smith won her third game.
Ella Parker also added a pair of singles and the only other RBI.
OU 2, Long Beach State 0 (11 innings)
Oklahoma loaded the bags in the first and third inning, but LBSU managed to escape as a 0-0 stalemate ensued into the fourth frame.
Deal matched LBSU in the circle, permitting only two walks through the first four innings. The 49ers managed to play small ball and get a runner to third base in the bottom of the fourth, but a looping line drive from Rebekah Durazo was snagged by a diving Dayton in right center.
After walks from Parker and
Kasidi Pickering,
Cydney Sanders hooked a single through the left side but Long Beach State left fielder Jacquelyn Bickar made a perfect throw to get Parker at the plate.
Nelly McEnroe-Marinas one-hopped the left field wall to leadoff the top of the sixth inning, but LBSU stood tall to retire the next three OU batters. Long Beach State escaped again in the top of the seventh despite a Parker single and Pickering double.
Deal's no-hit bid was finally snapped in the bottom of the seventh after Carly Robbins reached on an infield single dribbled to the first base side. Monticelli took the ball one batter later, getting Makayla Medellin to lineout to Pickering in left before she doubled up the Long Beach State runner at first base. Smith took the ball and hurled 4.1 innings of shutout softball.
OU broke the deadlock with two runs in the 11th. Emerling walked and moved to second base on a
Gabbie Garcia groundout. With two outs, Dayton roped an RBI double to left center and Parker followed with an RBI single to right.
Smith worked around a walk and retired the side in the 11th, earning the win.
