Brigham Frentheway was named the MPSF Gymnast of the Week and freshman
Francisco Velez Belendez was named Freshman of the Week after their performance in leading the Sooners to wins over Michigan and Simpson on Saturday, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation announced Wednesday.
Frentheway totaled a season-best 55.450 on his four events, scoring a season-high 14.000 to place third on floor exercise and a career-high 13.850 on still rings to help lead Oklahoma to a 327.700 total to finish ahead of Michigan (326.400) and Simpson (285.550). His rings score carried a 9.45 execution mark. Frentheway also scored 14.050 on vault and stuck his high bar dismount for a 13.550 to help the Sooners maintain their lead in the final rotation. The Cheyenne, Wyo., product ranks among the top 13 nationally on all four of his events, including the top 9 on three events.
Velez Belendez scored 14.000 to place third on still rings and stepped into the vault leadoff spot when called upon and hit a 13.450 in his first collegiate vault. The San Juan, Puerto Rico, product ranks second nationally on rings with his three-score average of 14.150.
This is Frentheway's second MPSF Gymnast of the Week award and Velez Belendez's second MPSF Freshman of the Week award this season.
OU has won eight MPSF weekly awards this season: redshirt freshman
Arthur Ballon was named Freshman of the Week twice (Jan. 14 and Jan. 29), Frentheway was also named Gymnast of the Week on Jan. 14, junior
Ignacio Yockers was named Specialist of the Week (Jan. 14) and Gymnast of the Week (Feb. 4), and Velez Belendez was also named Freshman of the Week on Jan. 21.
Oklahoma breaks from team competition for USA Gymnastics Winter Cup, which will be held Friday through Sunday, Feb. 21-23, in Louisville, Ky. Benas, Christiansen, Frentheway, Hajdu and Yockers will represent OU.
Also this weekend, Velez Belendez will compete with Puerto Rico at the Artistic Gymnastics Apparatus World Cup, Feb. 20-23, in Cottbus, Germany.
The Sooners return to NCAA competition on Friday, Feb. 28, against California and Nebraska in Berkeley, Calif. The start time for that meet is set for 8 p.m. CT.
