NORMAN – Oklahoma freshman guard
Aaliyah Chavez continued her standout debut season by collecting national and SEC recognition this week after powering the Sooners to a pair of wins.
Chavez was named the Tamika Catchings National Freshman of the Week and was selected SEC Freshman of the Week for the second straight week and third time this season. She also landed on the NCAA Starting Five and received honorable mention for the AP National Player of the Week.
She delivered one of the nation's top freshman performances in OU's 103-98 overtime win over No. 25 NC State in the ACC/SEC Challenge, scoring 33 points — the most by any freshman nationally this year and the third most all-time in a single game by an OU freshman. She shot 50% from the field (13 of 26) and added four rebounds, four assists and a block while helping the Sooners erase a double-digit second-half deficit.
Chavez followed with 14 points, five rebounds and four assists in a 53-point win over Maryland Eastern Shore, extending OU's winning streak to eight.
The nation's No. 1 recruit and 2025 consensus national player of the year in high school, Chavez continues to shine as one of college basketball's top newcomers. She leads all true freshmen in scoring at 19.1 points per game and is the only freshman in Division I averaging at least 19.0 points and 4.0 assists. She has posted three of the six 29-point performances by a true freshman this season and her 32 made 3-pointers rank seventh nationally and second in the SEC regardless of year.
Chavez is the first Sooner to earn three conference Freshman of the Week honors since Taylor Robertson (2019-20). Courtney Paris holds the OU record with nine (2004-05).
Chavez and the Sooners return to action Thursday at 6 p.m. against Little Rock at Lloyd Noble Center before heading to Oklahoma City to face No. 23 Oklahoma State on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Paycom Center. Tickets remain available for both games.
