In front of over 10,552 fans, No. 9 Oklahoma pushed its win streak to 10 on Saturday with a 92-70 victory over No. 23 Oklahoma State at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City, Okla. The Sooners are a perfect 7-0 under fifth-year head coach Jennie Baranczyk against the Cowgirls in the Bedlam rivalry, which resumed Saturday after a one-year hiatus. OU's 10-game winning streak is the second-longest in program history, trailing only the 2008-09 Final Four team's 20-game run. During the streak, the Sooners are averaging 98.2 points per game, winning by an average of 37.9 points and own victories over the top-25 Cowgirls, (RV/25) NC State and Florida State.
All-American center Raegan Beers recorded her 54th career double-double, the most among active players, with 22 points and 12 rebounds. She has nine double-doubles this season, best in the NCAA, and her seven 20-point double-doubles also lead the nation. True freshman Aaliyah Chavez shined in her first Bedlam appearance, finishing with 15 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals. She has scored in double figures in 11 of her first 12 collegiate games.
THE STARTING FIVE NOTES
• The Sooners enter the contest riding a 10-game winning streak, the second-longest in program history, trailing only a 20-game stretch by the 2008-09 Final Four team. OU hasn't just been good, they've been historic, over the last 10 games, reaching 100 points a program-record five times while averaging 98.2 points per game. During the streak, Oklahoma wins by an average of 37.9 points and shooting nearly 20% better than its opponents, with top-25 wins over OSU and NC State.
• OU swept the SEC's weekly honors as Raegan Beers was named Player of the Week and Aaliyah Chavez earned her fourth overall and third straight Freshman of the Week award. Beers averaged 24.0 points and 13.5 rebounds while leading OU to wins over Little Rock and No. 23 Oklahoma State, recording two double-doubles and pushing her nation-leading total to nine on the season, including seven with 20 or more points. Chavez averaged 17.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals, becoming the first Sooner since Courtney Paris to earn four or more conference freshman weekly honors as she continues to lead all true freshmen in scoring at 18.8 points per game.
• OU moved up to No. 8 in last Monday's AP Top 25 poll and checked in at No. 8 in the USA Today Coaches Poll on Tuesday, marking a run of seven straight weeks in the AP Top 10, the program's longest run since 2008-09. The Sooners have now appeared in the AP Top 25 for 36 consecutive weeks, the eighth-longest active streak nationally and the fourth-longest in program history, and their 28 straight weeks inside the AP top 20 is tied with North Carolina for the seventh-longest active run in the country. A new AP Poll is released an hour prior to tip on Monday (12/22).
• Oklahoma's starting five ranks second nationally in scoring at 73.0 points per game, trailing only No. 3 South Carolina at 75.6. All five OU starters average at least 10.0 points, led by Aaliyah Chavez at 18.8 points per game and Raegan Beers at 18.1. The OU offense is off to an elite start, ranking second nationally in scoring at 93.8 points per game and inside the top 20 in fast break points per game (3rd, 21.2), second chance points per game (6th, 17.3), paint points per game (6th, 46.3), assists per game (9th, 20.5) and offensive rating (20th, 115.2).
• OU's defense continues to rank among the nation's most disruptive. The Sooners sit third nationally in opponent field goal percentage at 31.5%, limiting teams to 11.9% below their season shooting average and 12.5 points fewer than their typical scoring output. OU also ranks ninth nationally in blocks per game at 6.5 and 27th in steals per game at 12.2. With a defensive rating of 76.1 that ranks 18th nationally, the Sooners have yet to allow an opponent to shoot better than 42% this season. Over the last 10 games, OU has held eight opponents to 70 points or fewer – the Sooners have won 35 straight and 72 of their last 75 when keeping teams under 70.
OU and NC Central have met just once before, an 89-25 win for the Sooners in 2009. In that game, Oklahoma held the Eagles to just 25 points, a school record for opponent points in a single game. The Sooners are 5-0 all-time against teams from the MEAC, and 2-0 this season (Coppin State and UMES).
The Sooners open SEC play on Jan. 1 when they travel to College Station to face Texas A&M. Oklahoma's home conference opener is set for Jan. 4 against Mississippi State at Lloyd Noble Center.
