NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's gymnastics team held its annual Red/White intrasquad scrimmage Saturday afternoon at the Sam Viersen Gymnastics Center.
The white team defeated the red squad in a competitive meet that served as a public preview for the 2026 season, which begins in just more than a month.
"I thought we did a really good job for this time of year," head coach Mark Williams said. "I felt like we had good intensity right from the beginning. We had a very high hit percentage. We had some really good gymnastics, some scores that we could take during our season, and we had a pretty good team score overall. So, I was really pleased with the performances today. I know it's just the start, and eventually we have get down to just the top four on each event, but it was a good day for us."
Saturday's meet was the first opportunity for the Sooners to show off their skills and compete on all six events in front of judges and fans. It also served as the first opportunity for many to view the newly renovated Viersen Center.
"I thought the meet was great today," senior captain
Kelton Christiansen said. "We brought the energy. The white team hit 100% and the red team had a few mistakes, but they picked it back up, so I'm really excited to see what we can do this season with this team. This performance really gave us the confidence boost that we needed, and showed that this team is ready to compete."
Senior captain
Brigham Frentheway added: "I thought the meet went really well. The team is looking really good and I feel like we are really preparing for the season properly. Obviously, all the guys did well, so I'm happy with that. We really appreciated seeing family, friends and all of the supporters come out and cheer for us. That meant a lot. I'm really optimistic for this team."
The Sooners open the 2026 season at the Rocky Mountain Open on Saturday, Jan. 17 in Colorado Springs, Colo. OU will host four home meets at McCasland Field House, beginning with a Feb. 1 competition against Greenville. OU also welcomes Ohio State and Air Force on Feb. 7, Nebraska on Feb. 28 and California on March 7.
