WBB Game Preview: Sooners Meet No. 3 UCLA in the Golden State

November 09, 2025 | Women's Basketball

NORMAN — No. 6/7 Oklahoma (1-0) heads west for one of the marquee matchups of the non-conference slate, taking on No. 3/4 UCLA (2-0) at Golden 1 Center, home of the Sacramento Kings, in Sacramento, Calif., on Monday night.

The top-10 showdown tips at 9:30 p.m. CT on Fox Sports 1 with Elise Woodward and Kim Adams on the call. Fans can tune in to the Sooner Sports Radio Network (107.7 FM) to hear Andrew Himes and Tyler Neal call the action, or listen in Spanish with Luis Rendon on Los Sooners Radio (1560 AM). Both radio broadcasts will be available on the Varsity App.

The Sooners dispatched Belmont, 84-67, in the season opener on Nov. 3. The one-week break between the first and second games marks the program's longest to open a full season (non-COVID year) since 2002-03. Under Baranczyk, Oklahoma is 27-5 when playing on five or more days of rest. Following the week-long pause, OU begins a four-game, six-day, cross-country stretch that opens Monday against UCLA, includes two games in Norman and concludes at Western Carolina on Sunday.

Picked fourth in the SEC by the league's 16 coaches, OU features preseason All-SEC selections Raegan Beers (first team) and Payton Verhulst (second team). The Sooners return the SEC's second-highest scoring percentage (62.3%), led by Beers (17.3 PPG), Verhulst (14.9) and Sahara Williams (10.6). Baranczyk added the nation's No. 8 recruiting class per 247Sports, highlighted by Aaliyah Chavez, the top-ranked freshman in the country. OU's 11-player roster includes six returners and five freshmen.

Monday's showdown marks the earliest top-10 matchup in Oklahoma history, as the Sooners have never faced a top-10 opponent before Nov. 10. Since Jennie Baranczyk's arrival in 2021, OU has tallied five wins over AP top-10 teams, with victories over opponents ranked Nos. 2, 3, 9 (twice) and 10. The Sooners and Bruins have met seven times overall, including three top-25 matchups (OU leads 2-1). Notably, six of the seven meetings have featured both teams ranked or receiving votes in the AP poll.

NOTABLES

• Monday's matchup marks the eighth all-time meeting between Oklahoma and UCLA, renewing a rivalry between two of women's basketball's premier programs. The Bruins hold a 4-3 edge in the series, including a 1-0 advantage in the Baranczyk era after their win in the second round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament in Westwood.  In that 2023 contest in Los Angeles, the Sooners erased an 18-point deficit before UCLA pulled away late to advance to the Sweet 16. The game marked the final appearance for Madi Williams, Taylor Robertson and Ana Llanusa, who graduated as the highest-scoring trio in OU history.

• A win on Monday night would mark Baranczyk's sixth top-10 and third top-five win and OU's first since a 71-70 win over No. 3 Texas on Feb. 28 and secure OU's first top-five win over a non-conference opponent since it beat No. 3 Duke in the 2001 national semifinal.

• Monday's matchup features two of the nation's elite posts as Raegan Beers faces UCLA's Lauren Betts. Both former five-star recruits and All-Americans were finalists for last year's Lisa Leslie Award, which Betts ultimately won. The pair have met three times in college — in January 2023, when Beers (then at Oregon State) scored 4 points in 14 minutes when Betts was at Stanford; in January 2024, when she tallied 21 points and five rebounds in a loss at UCLA; and in February 2024, when she left early after an elbow from Kiki Rice before Oregon State held on for a 79-77 win. Their connection dates back to Colorado prep basketball, where Betts' Grandview squad edged Beers' Valor Christian in the 2022 Class 5A state title game despite Beers' 14 points and nine rebounds.

• OU's path to success is simple, shoot a higher percentage from the floor than the Bruins. Oklahoma is 86-4 (.956) under Baranczyk when shooting a better percentage from the floor than the opponent. OU is 82-9 when holding its opponent under 42% under Baranczyk.

UP NEXT

• The Sooners return to Norman on Nov. 12 for a matchup with Kansas City at Lloyd Noble Center. Tip is set for 8 p.m. on SEC Network and is the program's Military Appreciation Game.
