NORMAN – After leading the Sooners to an upset-victory over No. 21 Missouri, senior outside hitter
Alexis Shelton has been named the Southeastern Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week.
This is the second weekly honor of Shelton's career and first of the season. The Charlotte, N.C., native shared the honor with LSU's Jurnee Robinson.
On the weekend, Shelton finished with a stellar .424 hitting percentage, 43 kills and 5.44 points/set. With 25 kills in Sunday's game, she moved into ninth all-time in program history with 1,314 career kills.
Against Vanderbilt, Shelton had 18 kills on a .304 clip, her sixth game hitting .300 or better this season. She added five digs and assisted on a pair of blocks in the four-set victory.
The match at Missouri was where Shelton shined, hitting a season-best .564 with a season-high 25 kills and just three errors on 39 attempts. Shelton averaged 6.0 points/set in the match, while also averaging 5.0 kills/set. She was all over the score sheet with three aces, five digs and four blocks.
In the fourth set, it was a pivotal kill from the senior that broke a 21-21 tie and put OU in front. Shelton followed that kill with two blocks to give OU set point and help the Sooners to force the fifth. In the fifth set, Shelton had a crucial series with a kill and back-to-back aces to give OU a five-point advantage after being ahead by just two points. She had the game-winning kill, giving OU a program record for kills in a five-set match with 76.
Shelton and the Sooners are back in action on Friday at home against South Carolina at 7 p.m. The Sooners will also host Georgia on Sunday at 2 p.m.
