NORMAN – The Sooners are set for a pair of matches at the MH Hospitality Omaha Challenge in Omaha, Neb., Sept. 6-7. OU will open the tournament with Drake at 6 p.m. CT on Friday, followed by a Saturday matinee with host Omaha on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT. Both matches will be played inside Baxter Arena on the UNO campus.
WEEKEND RECAP
OU went 1-1 during opening weekend, dropping a four-set match to TCU on opening night, before rebounding with a four-set win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Sooners opened the 2024 season with a 3-1 (23-25, 21-25, 25-21,16-25) loss to TCU. OU led the Frogs in most categories, including kills (53-47), assists (51-46), digs (51-48) and blocks (9-6).
Junior
Alexis Shelton powered the offense with 21 kills. Freshman
Kamille Gibson added 10 kills in her first match as a Sooner, while graduate transfer
Kari Geissberger chipped in nine. Senior
Payton Chamberlain notched 43 assists on the night and was just shy of a double-double with eight digs.
Kelli Jo Burgess hit a perfect 1.000 and the offense combined for 67 kills as the Sooners earned a 3-1 victory over Texas A&M - Corpus Christi on Aug. 31. After dropping the first set, 30-28, the Sooners won the next three, 25-17, 25-11, 25-21, to clinch their first win of the season.
Junior
Alexis Shelton had yet another dynamic performance, recording 25 kills and nine digs to go with four blocks to lead the offense.
Lydia Martyn chipped in 12 kills and added seven blocks in an impressive showing. Senior
Payton Chamberlain was one dig shy of a double-double with 39 assists to go with nine digs. Junior Leah Wilton-Laboy chipped in 16 assists in the final set. As a team, the Sooners hit .379 and tied a program record for assists in a four-set match with 64.
ROAD WARRIORS
The Sooners will play their entire 2024 non-conference schedule away from the friendly confines of McCasland Field House. Following the trip to Omaha this week the Sooners will stay in-state for two matches at the Tulsa Volleyball Invitational (Sept. 12-13). The non-conference slate concludes at the K-State Invitational Sept. 20-22.
The Sooners opened their 2024 slate on the road at the Ameritas Players Challenge in Lincoln, Neb., going 1-1 to begin the season.
MAKING A MARK
Just one week into the season, the Sooners set multiple program records in the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi game on Aug. 31.
Kelli Jo Burgess recorded the highest hitting percentage in a four-set match and match of any length, hitting 1.000 on 11-of-11 hitting.
Jasmine Ellison recorded five aces to set the program record for service aces in a single set.
Payton Chamberlain and Leah Wilton-Laboy combined for 64 assists against the Islanders to tie the record for assists in a four-set match.
BATTING 1.000
On Aug. 31,
Kelli Jo Burgess became just the second player in Oklahoma history to have a perfect hitting percentage in a match (minimum 10 kills). Burgess was 11-for-11 on the day in the four-set match, the first Sooner to achieve the perfect hitting mark in a four-set match. Previously, Grace Whitley had recorded an 11-for-11 performance in a three-set match in 2011.
STELLAR SHELTON
After missing the final two matches of the 2023 season due to injury, junior
Alexis Shelton picked up where she left off recording a pair of 20-kill matches on opening weekend. In the first match of the year, Shelton recorded 21 kills and added five digs. Against Teas A&M-Corpus Christi on Aug. 31, Shelton notched 25 kills on a .500 clip and was just one dig shy of a double-double with nine.
CLIMBING THE RECORD BOOKS
With 30 digs during opening weekend, libero
Callie Kemohah moved into the top five in OU history for digs in a career. The senior needed just seven digs to pass two-time Big 12 Libero of the Year Keyton Kinley for fifth place and now sits at 1,331. Kemohah now needs just 106 digs in her final season to finish in second all-time.
Senior
Payton Chamberlain moved into the top 10 in assists with 82 on opening weekend. Chamberlain, who played her first season at Wyoming, has needed just three seasons as a Sooner to crack the top 10. The senior boasts 1,959 assists and needs 585 to move into ninth.
STATS & RANKINGS
After the first week the Sooners are well represented in the SEC rankings. OU leads the way in blocks with 2.75 per set. OU also ranks third in assists with 14.38 per set and fourth in hitting percentage at a .281 mark and kills with 15 per set.
Individually, KJ Burgess leads the conference with a .722 hitting percentage, while
Alexis Shelton leads the league in kills per set at 5.75. Shelton also ranks ninth in hitting percentage (.387).
Jasmine Ellison leads in service aces (0.75) and
Lydia Martyn ranks No. 1 in blocks per set at 1.75.
Payton Chamberlain sits in second with 11.71 assists per set and
Callie Kemohah is ninth in digs at 3.75 per set.
THE OPPOSITION
Drake: The Bulldogs are coming off an 0-3 weekend with losses to Missouri, NC State and Creighton at the Bluejay Invitational. Offensively, Macy Daufeldt leads the team with 42 kills, while Megan Witte ranks second with 24. Addison Beagle has notched 90 assists and Jada Wills recorded 57 digs during opening weekend.
Omaha: The Mavericks enter the weekend 0-3, dropping matches to Houston, Wyoming and Washington State at the Omaha Invite. McKenna Ruch and Kali Jurgensmeier lead the way offensively with 37 and 35 kills, respectively. Ivy Leuck notched 70 assists, with Julia Owens adding 55 to open the season. Erica Fava leads the way in digs with 55.
LOOKING AHEAD
The road trip continues for the Sooners as they stay in-state and head to Tulsa for a pair of matches Sept. 12-13. OU will face Stephen F. Austin at 4 p.m. CT on Sept. 12 and take on host Tulsa on Sept. 13 at 6:30 p.m. CT.
