TULSA, Okla. – Behind a season-best 20 blocks, the Oklahoma volleyball team pulled off the reverse sweep of Tulsa with a 3-2 victory Friday night inside the Reynolds Center. The Sooners took the match 21-25, 19-25, 25-15, 25-22, 15-11 to improve to 5-1 on the season.
Lydia Martyn,
Kari Geissberger and
Alexis Shelton were named to the all-tournament team, with Shelton named the MVP.
Martyn led the defense with a career-best 11 blocks on the night. Martyn also added 18 kills, one shy of her career high, on a .607 clip.
Kelli Jo Burgess chipped in seven blocks, while Shelton, Geissberger and
Leah Wilton-LaBoy each added five.
Shelton finished with 22 kills and 14 digs for her second double-double of the season. Geissberger added eight kills and
Daleigh Ellison chipped in seven.
Callie Kemohah notched 13 digs to move into third place all-time at OU, bringing her career total to 1,381. Wilton-LaBoy added seven and
Jasmine Ellison notched six as the Sooners recorded 65 digs as a team.
The Sooners hit .444 in the opening frame but couldn't overcome an early disadvantage. Tulsa took an 18-11 lead, before an 8-3 run by the Sooners made it a two-point game at 21-19. A 4-0 run for the Golden Hurricane would clinch the set, 25-21.
The second set started with a close battle as the teams traded points to 13-all. Tulsa took an 18-14 lead and edged Oklahoma the rest of the way to take the frame 25-19. OU led wire-to-wire in the third set behind an impressive six blocks. The Sooners jumped out to a 12-4 lead and never looked back as they claimed the third set, 25-15.
The fourth set went back-and-forth throughout with 12 ties and seven lead changes going into the media timeout. The Sooners held the 15-12 advantage coming out of the timeout, but Tulsa drew even at 18-all. The Golden Hurricane fought off a pair of set points, but a successful OU challenge on the final play gave OU the 25-22 win.
At the switch in the final set, Tulsa held the 8-7 advantage. OU moved back in front at 11-10 as Tulsa called timeout. A 4-0 run from the Sooners, capped off by a kill from Martyn gave the Sooners the 15-11 victory and the match.
OU returns to the court for a pair of matches at the K-State Invitational Sept. 20-22. OU will face UCSB on Friday, Sept. 20, at 6:30 p.m. and close out the tournament against K-State on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 4 p.m. on ESPNU.
