Men's Golf Finishes Third at Inverness, Four Sooners in Top 20

September 10, 2024 | Men's Golf

TOLEDO, Ohio – Oklahoma men's golf got within two shots of the lead after entering the day six back, but the Sooners couldn't overcome a pair of top-five teams and finished tied for third at the season-opening Inverness Intercollegiate.

On Tuesday, the third-ranked Sooners (T3, +3) carded a 277 (+1) in the final round at the par-69 Inverness Club in Toledo. Four Oklahoma golfers finished inside the top 20, highlighted by senior Drew Goodman's T7 finish.

The Sooners were originally chasing No. 1 Auburn, the only team in the red entering the day. But a string of birdies down the stretch got the Sooners within a pair of the Tigers and No. 5 Virginia with six holes to play. Auburn and OU would eventually both move over par for the week as the Cavaliers won the event at 2-under to win by four strokes. Auburn's Jackson Koivun took home medalist honors at 9-under par, winning by two shots.

Goodman (T7, -2) was one of just 10 golfers in the 85-player field to shoot under par for the week. The preseason All-American signed for a 1-over 70 on the final day, but strong rounds under par on Monday were good enough to solidify Goodman's 25th career top-10 finish.

Cowan, a freshman All-American last season, was consistent all week, firing rounds of 71-68-70 to finish at 2-over par and tied for 14th. His birdie putt on the 18th hole moved him into the top 15 and gave the Sooners a share of third as a team.

Jase Summy (T18, +3) was sensational for the Crimson and Cream on Tuesday, carding a 3-under 66 to keep the Sooners in the mix. After posting over-par rounds on Monday, the Keller, Texas, product's final-round 66 secured him a T18 finish, his ninth career top-20 finish.

Matthew Troutman birdied the final hole of the event to post a 71 (+2) and finish in a tie with Summy for 18th at 3-over par on the week. The junior was one of 10 golfers to play par-3s in the red at the tournament.

True freshman Clark Van Gaalen closed his debut with a 2-over 71 to earn a share of 28th at 5-over. His 39 pars at Inverness over 54 holes were OU's second most in the lineup, trailing only Goodman's 41.

Playing unattached, Jaxon Dowell finished 63rd at 10-over.

Inverness welcomed five of the nation's top-six teams in the preseason Golf Channel poll, including No. 3 Oklahoma. Those five teams finished inside the event's top five, clearing the rest of the field by at least five strokes.

Oklahoma's 38 birdies were second most in the field to Vanderbilt's 39, and the Sooners' 188 pars were just one less than Virginia and Auburn's 189. OU was the only team in the field to have four players post at least eight birdies on the week.

The Sooners have now finished in the top five at 53 of its last 61 tournaments, a streak that dates to the beginning of the 2018-19 season. Head coach Ryan Hybl's teams have posted a top-five finish at their season opener in 12 consecutive seasons.

The Sooners return to the course on Sept. 21 for the Valero Texas Collegiate, an event that OU finished fifth at last season.
