LINCOLN, Neb. - The Oklahoma volleyball team opened the 2024 season with a 3-1 (23-25, 21-25, 25-21,16-25) loss to TCU Friday night inside the Bob Devaney Center in Lincoln, Neb.

The Sooners led the Frogs in most categories, including kills (53-47), assists (51-46), digs (51-48) and blocks (9-6).

Junior Alexis Shelton powered the offense with 21 kills. Freshman Kamille Gibson added 10 kills in her first match as a Sooner, while graduate transfer Kari Geissberger chipped in nine.

Senior Payton Chamberlain notched 43 assists on the night and was just shy of a double-double with eight digs.

Defensively, Callie Kemohah led the way with 25 digs. Kemohah now has 1,326 digs in her career, putting her in fifth place all-time. Freshman Jasmine Ellison added six digs and Shelton tallied five. Lydia Martyn led the way in blocks with seven with Shelton adding four.

At the first timeout of the opening frame, TCU led the Sooners 17-14. A 4-1 run out of the timeout tied the match at 18-all before a Martyn kill gave OU the lead. The teams continued to trade points before the Horned Frogs took a 23-21 lead to force an OU timeout. The Sooners staved off two set-points, before dropping the frame 25-23.

The Sooners took the early lead before a 4-0 run by TCU made it an 11-8 game. The Sooners pulled back within two at 12-10 off a kill from Carrington. TCU controlled the remainder of the set, pulling out to a 20-16 lead to force an OU timeout. The Horned Frogs took the set, 25-21, to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, the Sooners were in control, taking the set 25-21. Back-to-back blocks and an ace from Shelton pushed the Sooners to a 16-11 lead. OU extended its lead to 19-11 and was the first to 20 on a kill from Kelli Jo Burgess. An ace from freshman Whitney Wallace put the Sooners up 23-15. TCU fought off five set points, but a kill from Shelton clinched the set for OU.

TCU took a four-point lead, but the Sooners cut it to two at 11-9 off a block from Shelton and Martyn. The Horned Frogs never relinquished their lead, taking the final set 25-16.

The Sooners will return to the court on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT to take on Texas A&M - Corpus Christi in the final match of the weekend.
