August 12, 2024 | Football

NORMAN — For the 25th consecutive season, the Oklahoma football team is ranked in the Associated Press preseason top 25. The AP released its preseason top 25 Monday morning and OU is ranked No. 16.

The Sooners, entering their third season under head coach Brent Venables, garnered 566 points in the poll. Oklahoma's streak of 25 appearances in the preseason AP Top 25 is the second-longest current string behind Ohio State (36). It also represents the 66th time that Oklahoma has appeared in the preseason AP poll, second most behind the Buckeyes (71 times). OU's all-time average preseason AP rank is 6.9, best in the nation (Alabama is second at 7.1).

Additionally, of its 67 appearances in the AP preseason poll, Oklahoma has been ranked 20th or higher 64 times. That has occurred in each of the last 25 preseason polls.

The preseason top 10 consists of No. 1 Georgia (1,532 points), No. 2 Ohio State (1,490 points), No. 3 Oregon (1,403 points), No. 4 Texas (1,386 points), No. 5 Alabama (1,260 points), No. 6 Ole Miss (1,189 points), No. 7 Notre Dame (1,122), No. 8 Penn State (1,060), No. 9 Michigan (995 points) and No. 10 Florida State (971).

The Sooners are one of eight SEC teams in this year's preseason AP poll. Outside of the top 10, Missouri is ranked No. 11 (927), LSU is No. 13 (804), Tennessee is No. 15 (629) and Texas A&M is No. 20 (292). OU is scheduled to play three of the top six teams in the AP preseason poll and six of the top 15 schools: Texas (neutral site), Alabama (home), Ole Miss (away), Missouri (away), LSU (away) and Tennessee (home). Florida is the only other SEC team that plays six opponents in the AP's preseason top 15 (one of them is a non-conference squad).

Oklahoma, which is also ranked No. 16 in the preseason USA Today Sports AFCA Coaches Poll, was picked eighth in the SEC preseason media poll.
