Guyton Selected in First Round by Dallas Cowboys

April 25, 2024 | Football

NORMAN — Oklahoma offensive tackle Tyler Guyton was selected No. 29 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday night in Detroit, becoming OU's 49th first-round pick and the program's sixth first-round selection in the last seven seasons.

From Manor, Texas, Guyton is OU's second straight offensive tackle taken in the first round (Anton Harrison went No. 27 overall to the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2023) and the 12th OU offensive lineman (eighth tackle) drafted in the 10 years Bill Bedenbaugh has served as the Sooners' offensive line coach.

The 6-8, 330-pounder declared for the draft after four collegiate seasons, two in Norman. He played 1,064 career snaps on the offensive line at Oklahoma after spending his first two seasons as an offensive lineman and occasional H-back at TCU. He earned honorable mention All-Big 12 acclaim from the league's head coaches in 2023 and started 14 of his 20 games as a Sooner. All but one start came at right tackle, where he protected left-handed quarterback Dillon Gabriel.

"We're so excited for Tyler, not just for tonight, but for his entire pro football journey ahead," said OU head coach Brent Venables. "His growth as an offensive tackle the last few years is amazing and is reflective of the job Coach Bedenbaugh does developing his players and preparing them for the next level. That track record stands alone. Tyler's got an incredibly bright future and the Cowboys got themselves someone who is going to work hard and make them better. We wish him the absolute best."

As a redshirt junior in 2023, Guyton played in 10 games and made nine starts at right tackle, playing a career-high 663 snaps. He allowed no sacks on his 355 pass-blocking plays, according to PFF. In his first year at Oklahoma in 2022, Guyton played his first full season at offensive tackle. He started in five of his 10 contests, allowing only two sacks and no other quarterback hits in 191 pass-blocking plays, according to PFF.

At TCU, he appeared in nine games over the 2020 and '21 seasons (eight in 2021) and made one start (2021 against OU at H-back). He played primarily on the defensive line as a high school senior, earning second-team all-district honors while helping Manor High School reach the state quarterfinals. He also starred as a prep basketball player.

Guyton is the first Sooner selected by Dallas since 2020 when wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and defensive lineman Neville Gallimore went in the first and third rounds, respectively.

The second and third rounds of the NFL Draft will take place Friday night, while rounds four through seven will be held Saturday. OU is the only program nationally that has produced at least four NFL Draft picks each of the last 16 years.
