Lorenz Leads Sooner Contingent Thru 36 at Valspar Collegiate

PALM CITY, Fla. — Ben Lorenz led the way for Oklahoma on day one at the Valspar Collegiate Championship, firing a 67 (-4) to open the event, followed by a 70 (-1) in the afternoon to grab a share of third on the leaderboard thru 36 holes of play.
As a team, the 14th-ranked Sooners (6, -1) signed for a 281 (-3) and a 286 (+2) to sit alone in sixth place at the two-day, 54-hole event with only Tuesday's final round left to play. The 15-team field features 11 of the nation's top 25, including Oklahoma.
Lorenz (T3, -5), a 2023 All-America honoree, opened his day in the Sunshine State with a birdie after starting on the par-5 seventh hole. Two bogeys on the 17th and third hole were the only blemishes on his card as the Peoria, Ariz., product rattled off five more birdies to secure the 4-under 67. The afternoon round proved tougher for the senior, but he still sunk a trio of birdies offset by two bogeys en route to a 1-under 70. He shares third with Wake Forest's Marshall Meisel and Arkansas' Christian Castillo, entering the final round at 5-under par.
Stephen Campbell Jr. and Drew Goodman are tied for 27th at 2-over par.
Fresh off a top-10 finish at last week's Pauma Valley Invite, Campbell Jr. fired off five birdies in his first 10 holes of the opening round to finish with a 70 (-1). However, a +5 finish on the back nine in the afternoon dropped the redshirt junior out of the top 15, as the Richmond, Texas, product ended the second round with a 74 (+3).
Goodman, who carded 73-71, led the Sooners with 10 birdies, but a team-high seven bogeys in the first round set him back in the talented field. The junior from Norman will have a look at his fifth top-20 finish of the year tomorrow.
A pair of Sooners sit outside the top 50 in the field: Jase Summy (T54, +6) and Ryder Cowan (T61, +7).
Oklahoma tallied the third most birdies as a team on Monday and is on pace to finish even or under par in all eight stroke-play events this season. Florida State (-10) leads the field and is one of just five teams in the red.
