LUBBOCK, Texas – Oklahoma Softball head coach
Patty Gasso became the first Big 12 coach, regardless of sport, to earn her 400th conference win as the top-ranked Sooners swept Texas Tech 11-1 on Sunday afternoon in Lubbock.
OU (27-1, 6-0 Big 12) continued its unbeaten start to conference play with the series sweep of Texas Tech (21-8, 2-4 Big 12) and will enter the third week of Big 12 action with a one-game lead over Texas and Oklahoma State in the league standings.
Alyssa Brito (3-for-5, 2 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI) homered twice as part of a three-hit day and
Tiare Jennings (1-for-5, R, HR, 3 RBI) launched a three-run home run to close the series with a 12-RBI weekend while
Avery Hodge (2-for-2, 2 R) and
Rylie Boone (2-for-4, R, 3 RBI) each recorded multi-hit efforts.
Jayda Coleman (1-for-3, 2 BB, 2 R) led off the game with a single into left, then moved ahead 60 feet on a Jennings groundout. Sooner DP
Ella Parker (1-for-4, BB, 2 R, RBI) singled Coleman home with a hot shot back up the middle, stole second and scampered to third as the catcher's throw sailed into center.
Cydney Sanders (1-for-3, 2 BB, RBI) followed by poking an RBI single into left, plating Parker for a 2-0 OU lead.
Nicole May settled in nicely following the early run support, earning her ninth win of the season with 6.0 innings of one-run ball. The senior struck out six while scattering seven hits and a lone walk.
Brito made a terrific diving grab on a liner down the third base line to end the fourth, then blasted a towering two-run home run out to left in the top of the fifth to make it 4-1 Sooners. Boone singled home Hodge in the sixth before Brito led off the seventh with a solo shot, opening a six-run frame.
More insurance followed Brito's second blast in the seventh as Boone ripped a two-run single down the right field line to plate
Riley Ludlam (0-for-1, 2 BB, R) and Hodge. Two batters later, Jennings launched a towering three-run moonshot to dead center to close the Sooner scoring.
Karlie Keeney retired the side in order with a pair of strikeouts in the seventh, closing out her second straight game.
Coach Gasso improved to 400-87 (.821) in Big 12 play, becoming the first coach in the league's history, in any sport, to reach 400 conference wins.
