FORT WORTH, Texas — Oklahoma baseball took Game 1 of its three-game series at No. 12 TCU Friday night by a final of 7-3.
The ranked win marked head coach Skip Johnson's 200th career victory at Oklahoma and snapped TCU's 17-game home win streak.
"I thought Braden (Davis) was outstanding," said Johnson. "It was tough early, we just kept grinding at-bats out and that was really huge. Kyson (Witherspoon) came in and did a great job finishing the game. We executed with two strikes, there was a bunch of two-strike and two-out hits in that four-run (seventh) inning, that was huge."
Following a scoreless first inning, the Frogs (15-3, 1-3 Big 12) got on the board at the bottom of the second via sacrifice fly. OU starting pitcher junior Braden Davis limited the damage with a strikeout looking to leave a runner on third.
Oklahoma (11-6, 4-0) went ahead in the fourth on a two out, two-run home run from redshirt senior Michael Snyder. It was Snyder's team-leading fourth of the year on a laser that got over the leaping right fielder.
TCU retook the lead at the bottom of the fifth after a pair of walks put two on before OU reliever sophomore Kyson Witherspoon entered. The Frogs' Logan Maxwell found a gap in right field to plate the pair and put TCU on top through five.
The Sooners responded with a four run seventh inning. After singles from junior Jackson Nicklaus and redshirt senior Kendall Pettis, junior Carter Frederick dropped an RBI single into left to tie the game. Two at-bats later, junior John Spikerman ripped a ball up the middle to induce a fielder's choice and score Pettis from third. The next two at-bats resulted in another pair of runs scored for OU with senior Bryce Madron and sophomore Easton Carmichael lacing RBI singles to the outfield.
Witherspoon (W, 2-1) retired six of his last seven batters to close the game and keep the Sooners undefeated in conference play at 4-0. Witherspoon finished with a line of 5.0 innings pitched, no runs on three hits and two walks and eight strikeouts.
Davis went four innings, surrendering three runs on three hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
At the plate, Madron led OU with a 3-for-4 showing while five Sooners brought in runs on the night, paced by Snyder and Frederick's two RBIs a piece.
The teams continue the series Saturday with a first pitch set for 5 p.m. CT. The game can be seen via ESPN+ and heard locally in Oklahoma on SportsTalk 1400 AM/99.3 FM or nationwide on The Varsity app. Live stats can be found at OUStats.com.
