Sooners Set for Midweek Matchup at No. 8/6 Iowa State

NORMAN – RV/RV Oklahoma men's basketball returns to the road for a midweek clash at No. 8/6 Iowa State on Wednesday, Feb. 28. Tip is at 7:01 p.m. CT inside Hilton Coliseum. The Big 12 conference contest will air on the Sooner Sports Radio Network  (KRXO 107.7 FM The Franchise in Oklahoma City; KTBZ 1430 AM in Tulsa; Varsity Radio App) with Toby Rowland and Kevin Henry announcing and be broadcast by ESPN+ with Shawn Kenney (PxP) and Jess Settles (analyst) on the call.

OPENING TIP

•  Oklahoma is ranked 39th (games through 2/26) overall and eighth in the Big 12 in the NET. Ten Big 12 teams are in the top 45. Iowa State is eighth overall and second in the conference.

•   Junior Javian McCollum ranks sixth among active career leaders in free throw percentage (90.0%). In 78 career games, McCollum has made 215 free throws in 239 attempts. Senior Sam Godwin is 15th among NCAA DI active career leaders in field goal percentage, making 63.1% (255-404) of his shots.

•  McCollum needs 31 points to reach 1,000 NCAA DI career points. The Fort Myers, Fla., product scored 590 points in two seasons at Siena and tallied 379 points this season.

•  OU played in its first overtime game of the season on Saturday, Feb. 24, earning the 84-82 victory on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by McCollum. Junior Jalon Moore tallied his second double-double in the Crimson and Cream, finishing with 11 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Senior Rivaldo Soares scored a season-high 20 points.

OKLAHOMA vs. IOWA STATE | LAST MEETING

•  Junior Javian McCollum tallied 15 points and five assists and then-No. 11/12 Oklahoma defeated Iowa State 71-63 on Saturday, Jan. 6 in the Big 12 opener for both teams. Sophomore Milos Uzan scored 12 points, senior Le'Tre Darthard added 11 and senior Sam Godwin pitched in 10 points and six rebounds.

•  Oklahoma led 32-26 at halftime and found itself down 58-57 with 4:10 remaining. The Sooners put together a 7-0 run over the next two minutes to regain control. Godwin started the scoring spurt with a slam and Darthard drained his third 3-pointer before Godwin capped the run with a layup, forcing an Iowa State timeout. OU pushed its lead to as many as 11 points and spent the final 1:23 at the free throw line, finishing 7 for 8 from the charity stripe during that stretch.

OKLAHOMA LAST TIME OUT                    

•  Junior Javian McCollum buried the game-winning 3-pointer as time expired and -/RV Oklahoma earned the 84-82 overtime victory over Oklahoma State on Saturday afternoon at Gallagher-Iba Arena. McCollum finished with 14 points, including two 3-pointers that fueled the Oklahoma comeback. Senior Rivaldo Soares added a team-high 20 points on 7-for-9 shooting and drained three of the Sooners' seven-made triples.

•  Junior Jalon Moore recorded his second double-double in the Crimson & Cream, finishing with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Sophomore Otega Oweh recorded 16 points on 8-for-10 shooting and pulled down three boards. Sophomore Milos Uzan added 14 points, two rebounds and two assists.

•   After two made free throws by OSU's Quion Williams, Oweh drove to the rim and put the Sooners up 81-79 with 1:51 left in overtime. Oklahoma State's John-Michael Wright buried a corner three with 1:28 left, sending GIA into a frenzy. OSU had two chances to seal the Bedlam victory after an Oklahoma turnover, but both shot attempts were unsuccessful. Moore pulled down one of his team-high 14 rebounds with 21 seconds left, setting up the final play by McCollum.

CHASING RECORDS

•  Senior Sam Godwin has made 59.2% (61-103) of his shots this season, which would tie Kevin Bookout (2005) and Billy Graham (1976) for eighth in program history for a single season. Junior Javian McCollum has made 94.0% (78-83) of his free throw attempts, ranking first ahead of Hollis Price's 92.9% set in 2003.

•  After missing his first free throw attempt at Kansas State (Jan. 30) with 5:39 left in the first half, McCollum buried his next nine tries and finished 9 for 10 from the charity stripe. The Fort Myers, Fla., product rattled off 35 consecutive made free throws over his last seven games. McCollum is two made free throws away from tying Nate Carter (37 in 2007) for the most consecutive free throws in program history. Carter topped the previous record of 36 set by Hollis Price during the 2002-03 season. Colorado's Corey Higgins set the Big 12 record (45) during the 2008-09 campaign.

IOWA STATE CONNECTION

OU assistant coach Clayton Custer played his freshman season in 2014-15 at Iowa State before transferring to Loyola Chicago to play for Porter Moser. Custer appeared in 12 games for the Cyclones and averaged 1.1 points in 5.8 minutes per outing.
