Sooners Finish Fifth at Spartan Sun Coast Invitational

February 19, 2024 | Women's Golf

SARASOTA, Fla. – Sophomore Gracie Mayo placed third (1-under, 141) after back-to-back rounds under par, and Oklahoma women's golf finished fifth (7-over, 583) at the Spartan Sun Coast Invitational on Monday afternoon.

The 15-team field was scheduled to play 54 holes over two days, but due to heavy rain on Sunday, the teams completed 18 holes on opening day and the final 18 on Monday.

"Overall, we had a good day," said Oklahoma head women's golf coach Veronqiue Drouin-Luttrell. "We have pushed our players to get better in certain areas and they responded in a great way. We have shown glimpses of who we are as a team this week."

Mayo, who fired an opening round 1-under 71 despite the weather conditions, improved on her first-round total, finishing 2-under 70 on Monday. The Newport, Wales, product opened the second round with six consecutive pars before suffering a one-stroke setback on the 13th hole. Mayo moved back to even after her first birdie on the 15th. She tallied three straight pars to end the back nine and notched an eagle on the first hole and a birdie on the second. Mayo recorded a bogey on the fourth and concluded her round with a pair of pars.

"I am proud of Gracie and her solid play all week," said Drouin-Luttrell. "She has worked hard and it is rewarding to see it pay off."

Junior Reagan Chaney tallied the best round by a Sooner in the tournament, firing a 3-under 69 with three birdies. Chaney and sophomore Savannah Barber tied for 20th (2-over, 146). Barber tallied the first OU eagle of the spring on the par-5 14th hole and finished her second round 2-under 70. The Fort Worth, Texas, product recorded three birdies and an eagle.

Senior Kaylee Vesely tied for 45th (8-over, 152) and sophomore Isabelle Schlick tied for 55th (9-over, 153). Vesely started the final round on the 10th hole and tallied three birdies on the back nine, finishing 1-under 35. The Austin, Texas, product recorded bogeys on the second and sixth holes to conclude the round.
