Sooners Fall at LSU in Regular Season Finale

November 30, 2024 | Football

BATON ROUGE, La. – Oklahoma led 14-10 in the second quarter, but LSU outscored the Sooners 27-3 over the final two-and-a-half periods to win 37-17 Saturday night in Tiger Stadium.

Oklahoma (6-6, 2-6 SEC) tied the game 7-7 in the first quarter when junior defensive lineman R Mason Thomas picked up a fumble caused by junior defensive lineman Gracen Halton's sack and returned it nine yards for a touchdown. It was Thomas' first career touchdown and OU's fourth defensive touchdown of the season. The Sooners have registered a defensive TD in three straight games and in three of four road contests this season.

True freshman running back Xavier Robinson gave OU a 14-10 lead with 7:22 remaining in the second quarter with a 2-yard rush. It was his fourth rushing TD of the season. Sophomore quarterback Jackson Arnold's 50-yard completion to redshirt senior wide receiver J.J. Hester and 28-yard run set up Robinson's score that capped a 3-play, 75-yard drive.

LSU (8-4, 5-3 SEC) took a 17-4 lead when Aaron Anderson returned the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown. Zach Schmit then made a 44-yard field goal to tie the game 17-17 with 2:13 left in the half.

The Tigers went ahead 24-17 just before halftime on a 40-yard pass from quarterback Garrett Nussmeier to Chris Hilton Jr. Nussmeier and Hilton connected again for a 45-yard touchdown on LSU's first possession of the third quarter to make the score 31-17. LSU added two fourth-quarter field goals to reach the 37-17 final.

Arnold completed 14 of 21 passes for 110 yards and rushed 17 times for 75 yards. It was his second straight game and third this season with at least 75 rushing yards. True freshman wide receiver Jacob Jordan led OU with six receptions for 42 yards and redshirt junior Sam Franklin rushed six times for 61 yards, including a season-long 34-yard rush.

Senior linebacker Danny Stutsman led the Sooners with 10 tackles, bringing his total tackles to a team-leading 110 this season. This was his 15th career game and fifth this season with double-digit tackles.

Halton notched a career-high seven tackles, including the first-quarter sack-fumble, and Thomas added two tackles, a sack and a QB hurry. Halton and Thomas have teamed for 17.5 TFLs and 14.0 sacks this season.

Oklahoma, which is bowl eligible for the 26th consecutive season (second-longest streak nationally), will find out its bowl destination on Sunday, Dec. 8.
