STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Oklahoma volleyball team picked up its third straight victory with a 23-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-22 road decision over Mississippi State Sunday afternoon. The win moved the Sooners to 12-8 on the year and 6-6 in league play while MSU fell to 10-10 and 4-7.
The OU defense showed up in a big way, recording 18 blocks, including eight apiece by
Lydia Martyn and
Kelli Jo Burgess and five each by
Alexis Shelton and
Payton Chamberlain. The 18 blocks were the most in SEC play this season by the Sooners, besting the 16.5 they tallied against Texas.
Shelton notched her eighth double-double of the season with 17 kills and 11 digs to lead all scorers. Chamberlain was just a dig shy of a double-double, tallying 45 assists and nine digs to go with three kills.
Kamille Gibson and
Kari Geissberger each recorded 12 kills, while Martyn added nine. Geissberger also finished with five digs, two assists and four blocks. Libero
Callie Kemohah tallied nine digs to go with five assists.
Mississippi State took the first set, 25-23, in a back-and-forth battle that saw eight ties and three lead changes. The Sooners led 23-21 late and forced a timeout, but the Bulldogs ended the set with a 4-0 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
A kill from Shelton clinched the second set for the Sooners, 25-19. At the media timeout, MSU led 15-13, but the Sooners quickly responded with a 7-1 run to take a 20-16 lead. The Bulldogs pulled within three at 22-19 befpre OU used a 3-0 run to close out the set and tie the match.
OU jumped out to a 12-8 lead in the third before the Bulldogs responded to tie the score at 13-all. The Sooners pulled back out in front and led 21-18 late in the set. After the Bulldogs trimmed the margin to 22-21, Gibson notched back-to-back kills for set point at 24-21. The defense came up with a block to clinch the set, 25-21, and give OU the 2-1 lead.
MSU took a 12-5 lead in the fourth but OU used a 7-2 run to cut the lead to 14-12. Trailing by one, a Bulldog error tied the match at 16-16. Gibson gave the Sooners their first lead of the set and a 3-0 run forced an MSU timeout. The Bulldogs forced an OU timeout as a 3-0 run made it a one-point game at 22-21. Shelton gave the Sooners set point and Geissberger finished things to give OU the victory.
The Sooners return to McCasland Field House for a Wednesday night battle with Texas A&M (15-7, 6-6). The former Big 12 rivals will go head to head at 7 p.m. on Nov. 13 on SEC Network.
