NORMAN – The Oklahoma women's gymnastics team will head to Big 12 rival Denver for a quad meet featuring the No. 10 Pioneers, No. 11 UCLA and Stanford on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 3 p.m. CT. This will be the Sooners final road trip of the month of January.
Sunday's meet will be the third-straight quad meet for the Sooners. OU opened the season at the Super 16 and competed last week at the Sprouts Collegiate Quad. The Sooners will have two more quad meets before the postseason, hosting BYU, TWU and Utah State on February 9 and competing at the Metroplex Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas on Feb. 17.
BEST OF THE BEST
At the Sprouts Farmer's Market Collegiate Quad on Jan. 13, the Sooners came in first place over No. 2 Utah, No. 5 LSU and No. 12 UCLA. In a meet that featured four top-five preseason teams and three teams that advanced to the 2023 NCAA Finals, the Sooners led wire-to-wire, finishing with the nation's highest score, a 197.900. Bowers took home the beam title with a 9.95 on the event.
Audrey Davis came in second in the all-around with a season-high 39.625.
Katherine LeVasseur set a career-high in the all-around with an impressive 39.525 in her second meet competing all four events.
Soraya Hawthorne made her Sooner debut on floor, earning a 9.875 for her Earth, Wind and Fire disco-funk routine.
DAVIS, SCHEIBLE HONORED BY BIG 12
Senior
Audrey Davis and freshman
Hannah Scheible were named the Big 12 Gymnast of the Week and Event Specialist of the week, respectively, the conference announced Wednesday. This is the first weekly honor for Scheible and the seventh career honor for Davis. Davis earned a season-high on all four events and the all-around and was named the Team MVP at the end of the meet. On vault, she led off with a 9.85 on her Yurchenko 1.5. She recorded a season-best 39.625 in the all-around, placing second on the day. The senior was nearly perfect on the uneven bars, securing a season-high 9.975 to also tie her career high. On beam, she set a season best with a 9.9 to lead the Sooners to the highest beam score at the meet by over two-tenths with a 49.525. On floor, the senior earned a season high 9.9. Scheible earned a career and season high on her front pike half vault with a 9.925. She is the only gymnast in the Big 12 to post a 9.925 or higher on vault through the first two meets of the season. She is the only Sooners to go 9.9 or better in both meets this season on the event. She currently ranks seventh in the nation on the event and is No. 1 in the Big 12.
ALL-AROUND EXCELLENCE
When the Sooners took to the floor on Jan. 5, four athletes found themselves competing in the all-around:
Jordan Bowers,
Audrey Davis,
Katherine LeVasseur and
Faith Torrez. Bowers, Davis and Torrez all have all-around experience competing all four events and LeVasseur made her collegiate floor debut. All four athletes scored at least a 39.400 in the all-around with Torrez leading the way to claim the AA crown with a 39.625. Bowers was just behind her, recording a 39.600 while Davis and LeVasseur tallied a 39.500 and 39.400, respectively. In week two, the four once again all recorded at least a 39.400 with Davis notching a season-high 39.625, Torrez a 39.600, LeVasseur a career-high 39.525 and Bowers a 39.400.
FRESHMEN IMPACT
Two members of the freshman class have made their Sooner debuts and immediately made an impact to OU's lineups. On vault,
Hannah Scheible is the only Sooner to post a 9.9 or higher in both meets this season. The freshman leads the Big 12 in the national rankings, coming in at No. 7 on the event. She has had the top score on the event for OU both weeks, showing off her unique front pike half vault.
Keira Wells has competed both vault and beam for the Sooners this season. On vault, she's nailed her Yurchenko 1.5 for a career-high 9.875. On beam, she has been steady in the No. 2 spot, filling the whole left by All-American
Olivia Trautman who competed in that spot on beam for multiple seasons. At the Sprouts Collegiate Quad, Wells 9.85 was a huge score after the Sooners had a fall in the anchor position on the event.
STAYING AT THE TOP
For the second week in a row, the Oklahoma women's gymnastics team posted the highest score in the nation to remain the No. 1 team. The Sooners boast an average of 197.875, more than half a tenth over the next school. The top five saw a shake up with California coming in at No. 2 after posting a 197.875 for an average of 197.363. Alabama moved up to No. 3 with an average of 197.175. Arkansas came in at No. 4 (197.175) and Utah rounded out the top five with a 197.138. The Sooners are ranked No. 1 on bars (49.538) and beam (49.500). OU is ranked second on vault (49.400) and fourth on floor (49.438).
