CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oklahoma volleyball team fell 3-0 to Oregon State Friday afternoon inside Gill Coliseum. The Sooners moved to 3-1 on the season while the Beavers improved to 2-2.
Alexis Shelton led the way with 12 kills on the day. Daleigh Ellison chipped in seven kills while Lydia Burts and Taylor Preston added six and four, respectively. Payton Chamberlain paced the offense with 28 assists.
Defensively, Callie Kemohah notched nine digs to lead the team, followed by seven from Sydney Thompson. As a team, the Sooners out-dug the Beavers, 29-26.
Trailing 12-3 early in the first set, the Sooners went on 6-0 scoring run to cut the deficit to four as a block by Chamberlain and Kelsey Carrington forced an OSU timeout. Out of the timeout, Carrington notched her first kill of the set to make it 12-9. The Beavers used a 6-3 run to extend their lead and commanded the rest of the set. The Sooners staved off set point twice with back-to-back kills from Shelton to make it 24-19, but a kill from Mychael Vernon gave OSU the set.
In the second frame, the teams traded points resulting in seven ties and four lead changes. Down 8-4, Carrington and Chamberlain teamed up for the block again, igniting a 6-2 run for the Sooners to tie the match at 10-all. Shelton gave OU its first lead of the set with a kill to make it 12-11. With the Sooners up 14-13, OSU used a 4-2 run to take a two-point lead. OSU continued to stay narrowly ahead of the Sooners, but Shelton and Lydia Burts stuffed the Beavers to tie the match at 19. With the set again tied at 21, OSU used a 4-1 run to close out the set and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set started much the same as the second with OSU taking an 10-4 lead on a 7-0 run. Hannah Pfiffner stopped the run with her first kill of the match. The Beavers would push their lead out to an eight-point advantage, forcing an Oklahoma timeout. OSU would take control of the remainder of the set, winning 25-16.
OU will be back in action Saturday to take on Boise State in the final match of the weekend. The two teams are set to face off at 1 p.m. CT.
