Baranczyk Announces Trio of Staff Additions

June 16, 2023 | Women's Basketball

NORMAN – Oklahoma head women's basketball coach Jennie Baranczyk announced three changes to her staff ahead of the upcoming 2023-24 season on Friday.

Shannon Gage, a 15-year coaching veteran who spent the last two seasons as OU's Director of Women's Basketball Operations, returns to the bench as an assistant coach on Baranczyk's staff. Courtney Harris, who has served in various positions on Baranczyk's staff over the last two seasons, will assume the role of Director of Operations. Derek Cody, a four-time Emmy Award winner, joins the team as the Director of Video Content.

"I'm thrilled to make these staff changes that will continue to move our program forward," Baranczyk said. "As college athletics continuously changes, these moves allow us to adapt and set our program up for continued success. Shannon, Courtney and Derek are seasoned professionals with a diverse skill set and an unmatched love for women's basketball and Oklahoma."

Gage, a Tulsa, Oklahoma, native, returns to coaching after a nine-year hiatus where she served in behind-the-scenes roles. Before joining the Oklahoma staff on the operations side, she worked as an assistant coach at Oklahoma State (2013-15), Iowa (two stints: 03-05, 07-13) and Michigan (2005-07). In her three seasons in Stillwater, she helped guide the Cowgirls to three consecutive NCAA Tournaments, including a run to the Sweet 16 in 2014. Her three-year tenure at OSU produced the third-most winningest stretch in the program's history, compiling a record of 66-31. At Iowa, Gage worked with Hawkeye perimeter players, coaching 19 All-Big Ten selections, the 2010 Big Ten Freshman of the Year and the 2003 Big Ten Sixth Player of the Year. With Gage helping lead the charge, the Hawkeyes signed a top-10 recruiting class bringing some of the nation's top talent to Iowa City. Additionally, she coached a pair of all-district selections and two honorable mention All-Americans. With Gage on the bench, the Hawkeyes appeared in six NCAA Tournaments, including 2004 when All-Big Ten selection Baranczyk starred on the court for Iowa, and won the 2008 Big Ten regular season championship.

Harris moves into the Director of Operations role after spending the 2021-22 season as the Program Coordinator and the 2022-23 campaign as the Director of Recruiting and Operations. A two-time graduate of the University of Oklahoma, Harris worked on the operations side of Oklahoma Football from 2011-2018. She spent nearly five years as the Assistant to Football Coaches before being named the Football Administrative Operations and Special Programs Coordinator in March 2017. Harris returned to Oklahoma in January 2019 as the Assistant Business Manager for Athletics Travel. She joined Baranczyk's staff in May 2021 as the Program Coordinator and served as the Director of Recruiting and Operations last season.

Cody joins the Sooners as the Director of Video Content, a role that will continue to elevate the Oklahoma brand and its women's basketball student-athletes. He has worked in various content capacities since 2011, highlighted by a near-six-year stint as the Assistant Director for Video Operations at Mississippi State. Before that, he worked as a cinematographer for Netflix's Last Chance U, shooting 18 games for the series. He's won four Emmy Awards since 2018 and was nominated for his direction of Mississippi State Women's Basketball's Relentless series that aired in 2018. He was the Director of Video Production for Orlando City SC and the Orlando Pride from 2019-21, where he piloted the team's video content for social media, website and local broadcasts.

The Sooners will tip off Baranczyk's third season as head coach this winter after back-to-back seasons where OU made the NCAA Tournament. The 2023 Sooners won the program's first Big 12 championship since 2009.
