OU Falls in Bedlam Finale

May 20, 2023 | Baseball

NORMANBryce Madron doubled twice and Easton Carmichael hit an RBI double, but the Oklahoma baseball team fell to No. 25 Oklahoma State 11-1 Saturday at L. Dale Mitchell Park.

The Sooners (30-24, 11-13 Big 12) and Cowboys (37-16, 15-9 Big 12) played in front of a crowd of 3,371, the fifth-largest in Mitchell Park history and the largest since 2014.

Carmichael's double to right field in the second inning scored John Spikerman to make the score 2-1. OSU scored two runs in the first, third and sixth innings, then added three in the seventh and two more in the ninth.

Spikerman finished with two hits and a walk, and Dakota Harris and Kendall Pettis each singled twice. James Hitt (5-1) took a loss for the first time this season, while Ben Abram (7-2) earned the win for OSU.

"The biggest deal is from the very first play of the game, the ball was hit, and we have to make that play," Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson said. "We didn't play good offense and we gave them a couple runs. When you're playing championship-caliber teams, you have to make plays. It was a tale of two (runs). They kept stacking and we could never get rolling. That's the tale of college baseball."

Outside of the three-hit second inning, Oklahoma only managed single hits in four other frames. Madron doubled with two outs in the third inning and with two outs in the eighth inning. Harris hit a two-out single in the sixth, and Spikerman hit a one-out double in the bottom of the ninth.

Nolan Schubart drove in five runs for OSU, including a two-run double in the third and a two-run home run in the seventh. Chase Adkison hit a two-run homer in the ninth and finished with three RBIs.

Johnson commented after the game about the fan support and size of the crowds all season. OU registered its highest season attendance at Mitchell Park in at least 15 years.

"That's exciting. I envisioned that when I first took the job here, to bring folks here and to bring baseball back like it used to be, where fans get excited about baseball," Johnson said. "Baseball is an unbelievable sport. You can love it and you can hate it. One day you feel great, like last night, we felt really good about ourselves. Today, we feel really bad. If we focus on just the process, then we'll get better at it."

The Sooners turn their attention to the Big 12 Championship, which runs Wednesday through Sunday, May 24-28, at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.
