May 24, 2023 | Baseball

ARLINGTON, Texas — Oklahoma baseball jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the third inning, withstood a rally by No. 18 Oklahoma State, and added two runs in the seventh on its way to a 9-5 victory in its opening game of the 2023 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship Wednesday evening at Globe Life Field.

The Sooners (31-24) scored three runs in the first inning, plated one in the second and scored three more runs in the third. Carmichael hit a leadoff double in the second, and Sebastian Orduno and Wallace Clark were both hit by pitches to load the bases. Nicklaus drove a sacrifice fly to center field and Spikerman singled up the middle to plate Orduno. Clark scored on a two-out strikeout-wild pitch to bring OU's lead to 7-0.

Oklahoma State pulled within 7-3 in the third inning on an RBI double by Zach Ehrhard and a two-run single by Benge. The Cowboys made it 7-4 in the fifth on a solo home run by Marcus Brown.
