ARLINGTON, Texas — Oklahoma baseball jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the third inning, withstood a rally by No. 18 Oklahoma State, and added two runs in the seventh on its way to a 9-5 victory in its opening game of the 2023 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship Wednesday evening at Globe Life Field.
The Sooners (31-24) scored three runs in the first inning, plated one in the second and scored three more runs in the third.
Dakota Harris put OU on the board with a two-run single, then scored on a base hit by
Easton Carmichael in the top of the first. The Cowboys (37-17) cut the lead to 7-4 after five innings with three runs in the third and one in the fifth.
Carter Campbell pitched the final 4.0 innings of the game, limiting OSU to one run and three hits, to earn his second save of the season.
James Hitt (6-1) entered the in the third inning in relief of starter
Carson Atwood, pitched 2.2 frames, and was credited with the win on the mound. OSU starter Carson Benge (2-2) took the loss.
John Spikerman reached in his first five plate appearances, drawing three walks and hitting two singles. He saw 29 pitches over those five plate appearances, and scored runs in the first and seventh innings. Carmichael went 2 for 4 with a double and two walks. The bottom four spots in the OU batting order reached base in 13 of 22 plate appearances on Wednesday. Oklahoma drew 13 walks in the contest.
Spikerman led off the game with a nine-pitch walk and
Kendall Pettis followed with a seven-pitch walk, setting up Harris' two-run single.
Jackson Nicklaus, who walked twice and sacrifice twice, doubled to lead off the second and scored on a sacrifice fly by Pettis.
Carmichael hit a leadoff double in the second, and
Sebastian Orduno and
Wallace Clark were both hit by pitches to load the bases. Nicklaus drove a sacrifice fly to center field and Spikerman singled up the middle to plate Orduno. Clark scored on a two-out strikeout-wild pitch to bring OU's lead to 7-0.
Oklahoma State pulled within 7-3 in the third inning on an RBI double by Zach Ehrhard and a two-run single by Benge. The Cowboys made it 7-4 in the fifth on a solo home run by Marcus Brown.
Campbell started the sixth inning for the Sooners and worked around a one-out double, then stranded a leadoff single on second in the seventh and worked around a two-out error in the eighth.
The Sooners tacked on two more runs in the seventh to regain a five-run advantage. Clark hit a leadoff double and was replaced on second base by pinch-runner
Kade Fletcher, who scored from second when the throw on Nicklaus' sacrifice bunt sailed down the right field line.
Anthony Mackenzie later drew a bases-loaded walk to make it a 9-4 lead. OSU scored a run in the ninth on a double by Roc Riggio.
The Sooners play Texas Tech at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in a winner's bracket game at Globe Life Field.
