TULSA, Okla. —
Anthony Mackenzie,
Bryce Madron and
Sebastian Orduno each registered three hits and
Braden Carmichael struck out four over 6.1 innings to lead the Oklahoma baseball team to a 12-2 victory at Oral Roberts Tuesday evening at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
Nine different batters recorded a hit and five – Mackenzie,
Easton Carmichael,
Rocco Garza-Gongora,
Wallace Clark and
Kendall Pettis – drove in two runs for the Sooners (16-14). Madron was 3 for 5 with three runs scored, Orduno was 3 for 4 with a walk and two runs and Mackenzie was 3 for 6 with two RBIs and a run scored. OU totaled 17 hits in the game.
Carmichael (1-0) turned in his longest outing of the season by almost three full innings (his previous long outing was 3.2 frames, twice). He retired the first six batters of the game and allowed only two hits (both solo home runs) and no walks while striking out four in his third start of the season.
Tuesday marked only the second time Oklahoma has scored double-digit runs against the Golden Eagles (20-10) in Tulsa. OU's 12 runs were its most at ORU since scoring 13 in a 14-13 loss in 1987.
"It was a good night for us," Oklahoma head coach
Skip Johnson said. "I thought today we were really going on all cylinders. We had some really good at bats early in the game, playing offense, moving guys over, getting big two-out hits. It was huge to separate the game. We had some big battles with two strikes today and got some big hits. It was a great at bat by Mackenzie before he hit the double to separate the game a little bit. It helped Braden."
Oklahoma started the game with three consecutive hits by Mackenzie, Madron and
John Spikerman. OU plated two runs in the first inning on Spikerman's single and a sacrifice fly by
Easton Carmichael. Carmichael drove home Madron with a sacrifice fly again in the third inning to make it a 3-0 lead.
The Sooners plated two more runs in the fourth on a Mackenzie double off the top of the left field wall to extend the lead to 5-1, then put up four runs in the fifth inning to make it 9-1. OU sent eight batters to the plate in the fifth, scoring on RBI singles by Garza-Gongora and Clark, and a two-run single by Pettis. Garza-Gongora brought in another run with a base hit in the top of the sixth to make the score 10-1.
Oklahoma added two more runs in the eighth to extend the lead to 12-2. Madron hit a leadoff double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Clark, and
Jackson Nicklaus followed with a sacrifice fly that scored
Easton Carmichael.
Oral Roberts scored its two runs on leadoff home runs in the third inning by Holden Breeze and in the seventh inning by Drew Stahl.
Kale Davis relieved Carmichael with one out in the seventh and recorded one out in his first relief appearance of the season before giving way to
Carter Campbell who induced a fly out to end the inning.
Gray Harrison and
Aaron Calhoun kept ORU off the board in the eighth and ninth innings.
The Sooners return to Big 12 conference play this weekend for a Thursday through Saturday series at Baylor. Game times are 6:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday.
