NORMAN — Right fielder
Bryce Madron hit his ninth home run of the season, but the Oklahoma baseball team dropped its series opener against Kansas 8-2 Friday afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
Madron's solo homer over the right field wall in the fourth inning represented the first hit of the game for the Sooners (22-20, 7-9 Big 12). Left fielder
Kendall Pettis tripled to start the seventh inning and scored on a base hit by center fielder
John Spikerman. The Jayhawks (21-21, 6-10 Big 12) scored a run in each of the second and third innings, then plated three runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Starter
Braxton Douthit (4-3) pitched 4.1 innings and took the loss while KU starter Collin Baumgartner (4-1) went 7.0 innings in the win.
Third baseman
Wallace Clark doubled, and first baseman
Anthony Mackenzie and catcher
Diego Muniz also singled for the Sooners, which finished with six hits.
With a runner on first and two outs in the fifth inning, Clark hit a two-out double that bounced over the wall in right field. The automatic double prevented the runner from scoring and a flyout followed to end the inning. After OU scored one in the seventh, Muniz singled with runners on first and second, but one runner was tagged out between second and third, and a strikeout and fly out prevent more runs from scoring. Mackenzie hit a leadoff single in the eighth and moved to second when shortstop
Dakota Harris was hit by a pitch with one out, but a strikeout and fly out ended the frame.
Kansas scored a run in the second inning on a bases-loaded walk and one in the third on a sacrifice fly. KU added three runs in the fifth, including two on a double by designated hitter Janson Reeder. Left fielder Chase Jans hit the second of consecutive doubles in the sixth to score a run and right fielder Jackson Kline hit a two-run single in the seventh to make the score 8-1.
Freshman
Carson Turnquist was the last of six relievers for the Sooners and, making just his third appearance of the season, notched two strikeouts while retiring the side in order in the ninth.
Oklahoma and Kansas continue the series at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mitchell Park.
